But wait, there was more fun coming, as next it was time for the 'Drama Queen' to head to Paeroa Central. It was a delight to meet so many different personalities, and have a laugh with them. I met the self proclaimed 'fastest talker' ever, the best audience member ever, and another young actor who took centre stage. We were impressed how he thanked us after, shaking our hands. A highlight for us was the incredible singing and performance. Ka pai :)
St Joseph's Paeroa, what can I say? Quite a lot really as it was fun with a capital T. Just when I thought we'd had enough laughs, there were more. Another awesome Principal, along with teachers all with a huge sense of fun, so you know it has to be a successful visit. The students were so well behaved but also ready for action. Another superstar emerged when it came to performance time, look at that face. Some special hugs came my way to say thank you. The visit was heartwarming from start to finish.
After having to take a year off to recover from surgery, hey presto I was back. The first stop of the day was at Tirohia School. It's always great to be greeted by a Principal who has a sparkle in her eyes, as I know the students will be ready for fun They were a little surprised when the Queen turned up, the Drama Queen! My crown became very popular, as many students fancied wearing it for a lot of different reasons haha. I discovered a superstar when one of the seniors joined me for a fun performance of one of my poems. Thanks. It was fun
2024
Just when I thought my Duffy assemblies were over for 2022, I heard someone was needed to step in to visit Putaruru Primary School, so off we went. After offering to go, I got laryngitis, so it was a bit of challenge, but the children and staff were so perfect that it all worked out okay. It was another chilly morning, but the children warmed our hearts. It was extra special, as Jacqui from Duffy Books In Homes also turned up. She even had some of my book 'Scary Tales' to give away. Such fun :)
St Anne's at Newtown was the last school for this Duffy tour, and we couldn't have asked for a better school to end this wonderful trip. Each school reminded me why I love doing this work, and St Anne's was no exception. I was really taken by how all the children supported each other fully, in such a genuinely caring way. It was a pleasure to spend time here, and thanks for letting us hang out after for a while. It was also really great to meet their sponsors. A small school with a huge heart. Thank you.
Maraeroa School was extra special, as the acting Principal was the same Principal who gave me a hand up on my writing journey 8 years ago, when he offered me the role of drama teacher at his school. I could then focus on being an author. It was a real surprise to see him. I visited a few classes after, which is always special, and met awesome children including one special young man. Thank you :)
Whoop Whoop Glenview School - we laughed from start to finish. What a pretty setting for a city location, with the bush nestled in behind the school. The DP was Mr DP Extraordinaire, a born entertainer who I could've taken with me to every school visit. The kids were great, as were all the staff. We got shown their new whanau room and we loved it. Thanks everyone - it was fantabulous!
Every time I leave a school thinking it's the best, I arrive at another one that is just as brilliant. Natone Park School was one of those places who found a little place in my heart for them. We had so many laughs, & an impromptu writing/drama session for seniors after. Great chats and hugs. This young man was awesome in the way he greeted us. Even though it was a busy schedule, somehow our time was also relaxing and special. If I lived nearby I'd be back teaching drama whenever I was allowed.
Russell School was outstanding from start to finish. The children's behaviour was a credit to their teachers, and they filled my heart with joy. We all had a lot of fun as we sang the Duffy song, and I discovered a talented young star who joined me acting out a poem about a roller coaster ride. We could've stayed all day and Les had to drag me away. :)
TerrificTairangi School were having a tough day, with the principal off sick and the DP in a classroom due to other sick staff, but they showed us the true meaning of flexibility by getting everything organised in no time at all. The office staff were so helpful and friendly, along with everyone we met. The kids went with the flow and we had a blast. In this photo we were all having so much fun as I was being the catwalk model, and this fantabulous student joined in the fun, as the 2 senior boys had before her. Thanks for such a great time, after we literally blew in the door.
The wind was howling outside, but the warmth of the welcome at Titahi Bay North School, made up for it. A fully engaged principal, who was a delight, along with enthusiastic students ready for fun. When talking about how reading helps us, I was impressed by the young man who said we need an education, and the girls who said reading helps get a job.
2022 YES DUFFY ROLE MODEL ASSEMBLIES ARE BACK WOO HOO
2022 YES DUFFY ROLE MODEL ASSEMBLIES ARE BACK WOO HOO
Our last stop for this Duffy tour was 15 minutes away at Patutahi School. It's a school small on numbers but huge on enthusiasm, energy, friendliness and personality. They were a delight from start to finish, and we had a lot of laughs together. I also found some talented young actors who enjoyed ‘strutting their stuff.’ It was the perfect place to end this Duffy Books tour, and was a real reminder of why I keep doing what I do. Thanks Patutahi :)
Muriwai School a little south, was our next stop, and I had no idea when we arrived what a treat we were in for. Just when I thought my heart was full, I met these incredible tamariki who were full of warmth and love. Some truly inspirational students, talented and going places. Great questions, good sharing, some poetry and writing chat which was rewarding. If our future world is in their hands, we’ll be okay. Thank you for such a special time. :)
Te Wharau School where the gifts just kept on coming. Amazing behaviour, a sense of fun, lots of hugs, talented writers, fun teachers, laughs, dancing and a classroom visit I never wanted to end. Some children had their books presented by their teacher, and what positive things their teachers had to say. A warm feeling in a wonderful school where I left a little bit of my heart. I ran out of time for Room 7 autumn poems. Thank you everyone!
Then it was a thirty five minute drive into the country to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Whatatutu, and what a stunning setting for a school. Red and white buildings, leafy trees, a breeze to cool us down, and you can’t go wrong. The students that greeted us were super friendly, fun and great to hang out with. One junior seemed pleased to see us, and said, “It’s Grandpa and Granny!” He wasn’t wrong. It was a fun laid back visit with a lot of special moments.
Cobham School was our next stop. A small school with a grand entranceway, which lead to an awesome principal waiting to greet us. The children were bouncing with energy and enthusiasm. Seeing their excitement when they got their Duffy books was heart-warming, and many couldn't wait to start reading. Another fun staffroom, which always makes you pleased you got to spend time there. Thanks for helping us feel part of Cobham School.
The day couldn’t have had a better start than Waikirikiri School, once we found our way in. Everything about our time here was perfect, except it wasn’t long enough. The feeling of fun, whanau and festivity filled my heart with joy, and reminded me why I do this work. The food for morning tea filled Les’s puku. He was one grateful grandad. The buzz of friendliness in the staffroom was so welcome. Les had to drag me away. :)
Afternoon assemblies can be tough when it’s hot and kids are tired. But Elgin School were up for the challenge and succeeded. The minute we walked in, the Principal and office lady greeted me with such smiles I knew we were in for a good time. The kids all brought their sense of fun with them. and we had a blast. To make it even better, I hung out in a junior class and we wrote a poem together. My day was complete. Then we left and I let Les have lunch...... finally. He was happy!
What a welcome we received at Te Hapara Schoo., Koka Anna (who I’d liked to have taken home with us,) and two delightful team leaders. Another school where the principal tagged along - great stuff. I handed some books out in a junior class. and read a fun story about a Stack of Alpacas. Then one of the highlights was when Koka Lorraine’s class performed some poetry for me. I was instantly in my happy place! Thanks for sharing, you did so well. Loved it!
After three attempts to get to Gisborne, it finally happened and Kaiti School was first on the list What a treat it was. The fantastic principal played a large part in the assembly, and it was also special to have whanau members attend. Such incredible singing, and the most awesome ‘bloke,’ Matua……..to show off his acting skills. Time to hand out the books, and Gisborne Duffy Books assemblies are under way for 2021.
What a treat it was at Kelston Primary School. Smiling faces, enthusiasm and incredible behaviour. Big handshakes to the awesome staff. It was great to meet the principal, and have him run the assembly. We even met their sponsors which was pretty special. Loved everything about being at Kelston, and a big HELLO to the students from the deaf school. I enjoyed hanging out afterwards with some of the senior students and their fun teachers. It was a blast.
It was time for real Duffy Assemblies. I was blessed to visit Avondale Primary School and meet amazing kids and teachers, who were totally involved and enthusiastic. It was pretty special as this is the same school my granny learnt to read over 100 years ago. It was perfect from start to finish, but the dancing reminded me I was out of practice! Thanks Michelle, Kim and your wonderful student leaders. I'll be back one day, banging on the door - 'Let me in.' Haha

As the No 1 Drama Queen in the country, I now declare that Wigram School is pretty cool! Duffy Books via Zoom are so 2020, not the same as being there, but great to connect with smiling faces. What an awesome lot of kids I got to share my story with. Loved the question, 'who do I practise new poems on?' Absolutely anyone who will listen! Ka kite ano in Christchurch one day soon.
THANK YOU Concord School in Dunedin for letting me zoom in and be a bit silly, well quite a lot silly. I enjoyed sharing new poems with you and thanks for joining in the fun. Here's a photo of everyone wearing their crowns, well I am a Drama Queen! You had awesome questions ready for me, which confirmed what a fabulous school Concord is. Wait till Rosie hears what she missed out on!
Duffys with a difference as I zoomed in to Marton Primary School where a lot of smiling faces joined me for a bit of fun. Poetry sharing, a few stories, some great questions, including how old is Rosie, and one of the best questions ever - 'What do I like best about writing?' That has really set me thinking. Even got to sing the Duffy song. The only thing that would've made it better was being there :)
DUFFYS 2020 IS FINALLY HERE - BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY -
IT'S ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM

Crawshaw School was the last school of this Duffy tour, and a good choice to end with. Well done to the two young leaders who were waiting for us, and hosted us for the entire visit. They did a superb job, and I think one of them is a future leader, maybe the next Jacinda! I had a special treat as I met another real author, young Miss D in Room 1, who writes books for her classmates. She read her bumble bee and kitten story to me and... Wow, I loved it. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Kia ora Te Kura Amorangi o Whakawātea Our lives are richer for having met you all. There are so many amazing things to say about this wonderful school, and the special feel that embraced us as soon as we walked in the door. We felt as if we were whanau, so many smiles, hugs and waves. These children and their teachers made me feel proud to be a Kiwi. The manners shown were outstanding, and the ‘thank yous’ started in the senior school and filtered down. I'd return any day. :)
Ngati Haua School was our second stop of the day as we headed into the hills above Cambridge. We walked into an impressive musical performance, and felt at home instantly. There were some great kids, a couple of real drama Queens (and Kings) and friendly staff who looked after us so well. I felt like the Queen visiting as everyone made sure we were happy. There was one young man who has just stared school, and his excitement at getting his books filled my heart with joy.
Another week of Duffy schools to visit. I thought it very appropriate that the wonderful young leader to meet us at Melville Primary School was called Precious, and that’s the perfect way to describe our visit today….. precious and memorable. What amazing children lead by an oustanding principal, whose support for ‘her kids’ shines out for all to see. A visit full of fun happenings, and I hear they’re studying poetry next term. I might have to pop in for another visit.
The great schools just keep on keeping on. St Pius was another fantabulous school packed with awesome kids who were ready and waiting for the excitement that a Duffy assembly brings. I loved all the costumes the junior/middle school were wearing, and the room was full of Spidermen, Harry Potter, Princesses, and even a Where’s Wally! Thanks everyone for such a great time. You're the best!
Horotiu School is never a disappointment as it’s packed full of incredible kids, and the teachers aren’t bad either! I was excited to return, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I even managed a dance with the entertaining D.P. to the kids’ amusement. After the assembly I was interviewed by two senior students for their very own school radio! I had my own little cheer squad of juniors who told me some ‘knock knock’ jokes then enjoyed me reading ‘Scary Tales…’ to them. Thanks everyone for a special visit. :)
Today got off to a fantastic start at Forest Lake Primary, where cool kids and teachers hang out. I had great memories of my last visit a few years ago, and as soon as I arrived I was reminded why. Everyone was so friendly that it made for a great visit. Excellent manners, kids ready to join in, a sense of fun, lots of hugs, and we were in for a treat. I so enjoyed hanging out with the Wednesday writing group, and I'd go back anytime.
Whitiora Primary School was the next stop for us. It was good to be greeted by the principal, and we appreciated having him stay for the entire assembly. There were some excited students waiting to get their books, and it’s great to see kids loving the Duffy journey. Thank you for letting me hang out in a senior class with some fabulous students to talk about writing, where ideas come from, and having a few laughs along the way. I love those times, they are really special.
It was ‘great to be back’ at Insoll Ave Primary, as this is where my Duffy Books journey began 5 1/2 years ago. The kids were brilliant, and joined in sharing their sense of fun and excitement. The staff were great, some even showing their mischievous side, which I loved. What a blessing to spend time in Whaea Jenine’s class with such awesome kids. Thanks for the wonderful comments, especially being told I'd been inspiring. You all inspire me too! I'd come back anytime! :)
Thank you Rhode St School for such a fantastic welcome with so many smiling faces to cheer me up as I hobbled in. I discovered new drama stars here as they acted out one of my poems. Another school with fantastic staff, and I loved how they all got up onstage for the Duffy song. Some children asked me, 'pleeease
come and visit our class?' so Room 1 was where we headed to sign books, arms and hands, and have some laughs. Thanks :)

Time to kick off another round of Duffy Book assemblies. I couldn’t have chosen a better school to begin than Nawton Primary, just around the road from home. Kids and staff were as awesome and
friendly as I remember. Thanks Room 6 for letting me hang out for a while. I got inspiration for a new poem while there, ‘Granny Goes Flying,’ and fly I did, right across the concrete path. A HUGE thanks to the two junior 'stars' who helped me, and hugged me making sure I was okay!

Reefton Area School, definitely one of my best school visits ever, and it was great to end this tour on such a high! There were 2 students waiting for us, and the Duffy teacher made us feel incredibly welcome. There was even a large screen up in the hall saying, ‘Welcome Judi.’ I got to enter to a fun song, followed by dancing to the Duffy song. This visit got better and better, with rock star students, wonderful staff, a lot of hilarity, and chooks! Anyone who visits Reefton School is truly blessed.
Just over an hour up the road, is Karamea Area School. I don’t think you can go much further than Karamea! I arrived early, and school still let us in the door, haha, and in no time at all we were singing the Duffy song with the compulsory dancing. This school had a surprise within too, as the principal (who was away today) had left a card thanking me for all I do for kids, and guess what, I used to work for her about 20 years ago. Thanks for a fun visit everyone!
Another glorious day on the West Coast. Our first stop was Granity, a small school with a huge personality. The kids were absolutely outstanding, and their behavior was a credit to their teachers. I loved their enthusiasm for whatever was coming next, and the way they joined in. There was something special about Granity School, as it's the first time I’ve visited a school with its very own ‘dolphin viewing platform!’ It's also been used as a stage for a show. Cool!
Our journey up the West Coast continued, and it was time for us to call in to one of the smaller schools on this tour, Barrytown Primary School, which is only a few hundred metres from the beach. The kids had been busy that day at athletics, but that didn’t stop them being ready to get into action and show me their brilliant acting skills, even the principal! Thanks for the laughs everyone, a little school with a big heart. I think is one of my favourite photos of any school visit!
Rununga Primary School was next on our busy itinerary, as I continued seeing more of this gorgeous country we all live in. Another friendly welcome, and then it was time to meet the cool students. I think a favourite was the young girl who jumped up to show me her kung fu moves, when she heard about my ‘Granny Does Karate’ book! She had some pretty scary looking kicks going on😊 They had some lively adults along as well, who really added to the fun.
First stop today was Cobden Primary School. As as soon as we met the principal we knew it’d be awesome. She’d be the perfect teacher for classes in, ‘how to be super friendly and smiley!’ Those smiles continued with each staff member we met, and spilled over into the students. What a talented young speechmaker who both welcomed and thanked us. Another impressive staff room full of friendliness. I enjoyed hearing about the poetry some students have been writing, and also finding a fellow lover of colouring in! Thankyou.
I don’t have enough time to tell you about the fabulous happenings at Blaketown School in Greymouth. These students were the most enthusiastic and fun anywhere, and made my job so easy. The hugs I got from so many kids was heart warming, along with their love of poetry. It was especially awesome to hear they’d looked at some of my poetry last year. I’d go back anytime just to hang out in the staffroom, it was so much fun. You guys rock!
I've never been to the West Coast, and what a great introduction I had today at Ross School, the perfect place to start our Duffy Books tour for 2019. What a wonderful feel and the school was overflowing with cool kids full of life, along with pretty special staff. They got into the fun of things quickly, and then had some excellent questions to ask me which is always rewarding for me as a guest. Thanks everyone for a super visit.
DUFFY BOOKS TOURS 2019
It was time to travel back into Whangarei, eating lunch on the run again, or drive in this case, and get to Manaia View School for the last Duffy role model assembly of this tour in Northland. Some highlights for me were the item the full immersion class did for Les and myself, which brimmed with passion for their performance. The cutest dancing girls from the juniors, and the fact they sang the Duffy song, which always makes me smile and want to dance. That's it for 2018!
As we headed towards Waiotira School we were on a high, and this only continued when we arrived. The kids had already had visitors, but that made no difference, as they walked in the door with their senses of humour ready and willing to go. Their bright and bubbly personalities shone out……. and that was the teachers 😊 but the kids were just the same. I was hoping they’d kidnap me and never let me go. Thanks to the girl who told me I was her favourite Duffy role model ever. Wow!
It was up and off again for another day of visiting schools, and Portland School was no exception. Wow, wow, wow, from the view to everyone we met, and the delicious kale chips, it couldn’t have been any better, unless I’d been allowed to stay all day. The kids were amazing, enthusiastic and keen to be involved. They’d been looking at my website and knew all about a lot of my poems which was a real buzz for me. One word for everyone at Portland School - bottoms!
Another fabulous small country school to end the Duffy day. Whangaruru School is also in a spectacular part of the country, and the kids were just amazing. It was heartwarming to see the excitement at getting their Duffy books. It really was a case of arriving strangers and leaving as friends. Thanks to the awesome staff for a superb visit. If I lived closer I’d be hanging out there all the time and having those talented kids in my drama classes.
Hikurangi School was full of special treats, brilliant behavior, talented actors and super cool staff. What a great assembly, full of fun and laughter with everyone adding to the atmosphere. I got to spend time in two senior classes, and then with a group of keen writers which I always enjoy. They asked some great questions, and I hope I gave them some useful writing tips. Thanks for waiting for me..., I blame Les hahaha........ a fabulous visit. :)
Day three began at Totara Grove School, where we were greeted by the principal. Friendly staff are always appreciated. It was special to watch juniors lead the assembly. The kids did an awesome job of the Duffy song, and I got to dance with Les, and a poor random teacher, who had a great sense of rhythm. A special treat was to spend time with some talented writers, and be interviewed by Whaea Erin's class. What a cool class! :)
Te Horo School where we arrived hearing the Duffy song being sung, and left with a bag of goodies, and a present. That’s the first time that has happened and I was gobsmacked. Meeting the kids was a blessing. Small country schools have a real family feeling, and Te Horo was no exception. Driving out there reminded me what a beautiful country we live in. The scenery was stunning, along with the fantabulous staff. P.S. Got letters from all the students, wow, I cried happy tears. Thankyou!
Whau Valley School got off to a great start when a young man insisted on escorting us to the office. Friendliness kept on flowing as we met the bubbly and funny DP Mrs K. I knew we were in for a good visit as soon as we were asked where’s Rosie. The fun just kept continuing as the kids all brought their senses of humour with them. Enjoyed meeting a group of keen writers too. Thanks!
Te Kura O Otangerei where a warm welcome waited within. Gorgeous smiles that made us feel welcome. The kids were enthusiastic and ready for whatever fun came their way, and fun we had. After I’d finished, the students performed for us, and wow, wow, wow, their singing was so full of passion that it gave me ‘goosies.’ I alway enjoy spending time in a classroom after, and the senior class was where I landed, and got to meet superstars! Thanks everyone for a wonderful visit.
Ruakaka Primary School was the perfect place to begin this Northland tour of Duffy Books. It was a friendly and welcoming environment, and I loved how enthusiastic, interactive and positive all the students were. It’s always special when the Principal is not only there to meet me, but hangs out with everyone for the whole assembly. It’s also really heartwarming when a child, or children come up to me and thank me for visiting their school. In this photo you can see this amazing unicorn I got to meet, and his 'human'. He was brilliant, and even performed a poem for everyone. :)
Pinehill Primary School was the last stop for this Duffy tour, making it my 100th Duffy assembly. Haha I am already on my way to the double centennary! It was a chilly morning, but the children’s bubbling excitement was the total opposite, as we headed to the hall ready to share poetry, hand out some books, and of course dance and sing the fantastic ‘Duffy song.’ I was impressed by the young leaders, and also the young man who thanked us. A great public speaker.
The last stop of the day was Brockville Primary School. It was great to meet such enthusiastic children, all excited as they looked forward to getting their Duffy Books. Guess what? They even have a teacher there called ….. wait for it…… drum roll please…… Mr Duffy! How cool is that. About as cool as all those awesome dancing juniors, and middle and senior school who asked me outstanding questions. Brilliant guys! Thanks for a good afternoon. :)
Carisbrook School was a great place to visit. Thanks for such a positive, excited welcome. You were so quiet, we thought there was no one in the hall, but no, there you all were, senses of humour ready for action. You guys sure can dance and know how to enjoy yourselves. I’ll be inviting you all to my next party. Loved the classroom time with fabulous questions, about writing and how you need to read to succeed. It was a special visit. We’re so pleased we got to share time with you all.
Nestled into the hills we found Concord School, a spectacular visit from start to finish. With awesome students and staff all ready for whatever their Duffy assembly delivered. Poetry was delivered in abundance, and laughs and appreciation were sent back my way. The kids had been looking at my website and a teacher asked where Rosie was. She’d love to visit. It was cool to meet Room 4 kids, as my friend’s class in Rotorua have been exchanging letters with them. I could've stayed all day! Thanks.
Bathgate Park School were ready and waiting for their assembly. Their sense of fun was evident from the moment we walked in, and they were ready to ‘party’ in true Duffy style. They were a well behaved, attentive audience ready for whatever came their way. Their willingness to join in and enjoy was fabulous.
I was lucky enough to visit a year 5/6 class, and answer questions, which showed their great thinking skills. Thanks for an enjoyable time.

Te kura o otepoti what can I say? How about wow, wow, wow. What a welcome! Thanks for teaching Les and me more about your culture in such an inspiring way. Your laughter was infectious and joyful, and I loved the way you joined in the fun of poetry. Also a big thank you for the way you so generously hosted us, and the brilliant way you entertained us through your own lunchtime. What amazing singers you all are, and Les and I are both blessed for having visited your kura.
Hello Dunedin, and Halfway Bush School, where cool kids and teachers spend their days. Small in numbers, but large in enthusiasm and excitement, led by a friendly, fantastic principal, who the kids found out can dance. I was pleased at the delight of a young man finding out we'd be singing the Duffy song. Another special moment was when a student showed me his books, saying, “Judi, it’s very important to read.” He’s not wrong, and it’s rewarding meeting such inspiring youngsters. Great visit!
Pembroke School in Oamaru was next for a Duffy visit. I was very thankful for their support too about me feeling ‘yuk.’ But I somehow found a bit of energy, and even managed to get out among the kids for a b
it of fun. We had some laughs before handing out books. I really enjoyed that special time with a senior class as they asked me fabulous questions. I met a couple of Rosie’s fans, who told me they enjoy reading about what she’s been up to.

Oamaru North Primary was the first stop of the day. Sadly I was pretty sick after someone had shared their bugs with me. But everyone at school was understanding when they realised I was unwell. But the actress in me says the show must go on, and we managed, minus my normal bouncing around. It was special to hear one of the classes had been enjoying reading some of my poems and ‘Mr T Rex’and 'Granny Does The Boogey' were favourites. Thank you!
By the afternoon, Les and I had made a huge discovery. Waimate is a hidden, secretive gem, that is full of awesome kids and fantabulous teachers. Waimate Main School confirmed this, as they were in the hall, with their senses of humour ready for whatever might happen. It was full of surprises, even for me haha, as a talented bunch of kids interacted at every opportunity. I found more dance partners, and one was extraordinary. My big disappointment was I don’t live to closer to visit again.
St Pat’s followed, and there is always something special about small schools. Forty delightful children were ready and waiting for their Duffy Book role model assembly, and I wasn’t disappointed with their enthusiasm. This visit was extra special, as this was my 100th Duffy assembly. There's no better reason to give away vouchers, writing journals and a bag of rainbow fish. More great staff who know how to laugh, and even one who got to test her acting skills.
Waimate Centennial School was our first stop of the day, and what a treat was in store for us. The smiling faces that greeted us were an absolute delight. Another school with enthusiastic, and at times hilarious staff. More dance moves were performed, and no Granny broke a hip in the process. With such positivity, fun was the only option. I met a talented young girl who had written an exceptional Anzac poem. More class visits, and Les had to drag me away. Thanks.
Our day finished at Timaru South School, with a hall full of excited children waiting for their Duffy assembly. A real highlight was meeting their sponsors from KPMG. I was lucky to spend time in two classrooms, handing out books in one, and answering some great questions in the next, then we wrote a classroom poem about a crazy granny! I met a few children who also love writing and heard about some of their writing projects. Thanks for a great afternoon everyone.
Oceanview Heights Primary was brilliant from the moment we walked in till we left. We had no idea what was waiting for us in the hall, one of the most responsive audiences ever. Their excited laughter was infectious, and completely heart-warming. As for the staff, what an hilarious bunch, (they even have a teacher who writes poetry) and they made me want to go back to school, when can I start? It was a real experience that we won't forget.
Arowhenua Maori School at Temuka was full of surprises, which began with finding out the principal loves to write, and we used to live in the same small coastal settlement. Small in numbers but big in excitement, feeling, and audience response. I found a couple of superstars while there. Les enjoyed talking to some of the children afterwards, and thanks to the staff for such a relaxed and friendly chat. Great people, awesome environment.
Hampstead School was the last stop of the day, and what a fun place to end. It was a blast from start to finish including my dance with the principal, who was a great sport. The teachers and children all brought their sense of humour with them, and were ready to laugh and enjoy poetry. I got to sneak in visits to three classrooms, to give out some books, read poetry and have a chat about my work and writing. They should have a sign outside, ‘Beware hilarious kids inside.' Thanks!
Netherby School at Ashburton was the next stop on today’s travels. Two team leaders who were both full of fun were waiting for us. What a gorgeous group of lively, enthusiastic children greeted us in the hall. Les and I noticed how well behaved everyone was when asked to be ready to listen. We were impressed at the quality of the questions the seniors asked, some of the best ever, which shows school is full of thinkers. We loved our time here.
Today we headed south, but didn’t get off to a good start due to the heavy traffic in Christchurch. We were relieved to arrive at fabulous Rakaia School, where the children were ready for fun, and fun we had. They encouraged me to be as silly as can be. I even met two teachers who do hip hop! I was privileged to meet a group of talented young writers, and chat with them about writing, and that is always a rewarding experience. Thanks for such a cool visit.
I couldn’t have had a better school for my first 2018 Duffy Assembly than Linwood Ave Primary School, Les's old primary school in Christchurch. These fabulous students reminded me how much I love being involved with Duffy Books. We had a lot of laughs, and their sense of humour shone through as we laughed our way through the visit. The Principal is awesome, school leaders outstanding, staff friendly, and my classroom visit a delight.
2018 DUFFY ASSEMBLIES
Thanks Gate Pa School for such an energetic, rousing, vibrant and hilarious assembly. The thing that stood out for Les and myself was your sense of humour. I don't think we've ever heard students laugh so loud and so much. You obviously enjoyed me being a silly drama queen, and I loved your response. Teachers dancing always adds to the fun. Thanks Miss B for letting us invade your classroom after assembly and hang out and get hugs. :)
Nothing like a bit of dancing to begin a Duffy's assembly. This was a special occasion as it was Brookfield Primary's first ever role model assembly. Les and I were so impressed at how quiet the children were when we walked in. Pretty clever teachers at this school it seems. I had lots of fun dancing, and had talented stars to help act out one of my poems. Les and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and what great huggers you have here. Thanks.
Putuaki School Kawerau was the final stop of the day. Wow, wow, wow I was stunned by the fabulous boxes that had been decorated. Pictures from my books, Rosie the dog, my poems and even me. I've never seen this before, and they were absolutely awesome. Well done everyone. Great student leaders met us, and made sure we were loked after the entire visit. Two hightlights were getting a new grandson! Then meeting the friendly principal. We had a great time.
Well hello there to the brilliant students and teachers at Kawerau South School. We arrived in the pouring rain, but soon forgot about that when we heard the singing coming from inside. This visit was fun from start to finish, as the kids were full of enthusiasm, and ready for whatever was in store. Les and I were so impressed with their behaviour. When we realised the rest of the school missed out, we snuck in a 10 min visit to the middle school. A real joy to be at KKS.
Day 2 began at Te Mahoe School, up the river from Whakatane. Two of the most delightful senior boys we've met, were waiting to show us their school, which they did with real pride. What a well behaved group of students, all ready to join in the fun of poetry with me. A real highlight was their incredibly heart warming, passionate singing, which filled me with pride to be a Kiwi. A great school with fabulous, fun staff, and they had potato chips! A great visit. Thanks.
Another week of Duffy tours began today when we visited the fantastic Nukuhau School. What a setting, what teachers, what a principal, what students and what a totally rewarding tme we had. Everyone was so friendly and happy, you just know you're blessed to be visiting a special place. Not a bad place to be working. I was happy to answer great questions, and share a little pf my life with these gorgeous kids. As always, classroom time was embraced and enjoyed.
Friday afternoon, after lunch, is a big ask for kids to remain focused. Well done Allandale School for such a vibrant visit, full of excited laughter and enjoyment. Thanks for all those fantastic hugs from so many awesome kids. The hall was being used for their art show, so we only got to meet the middle school, but I managed to sneak into Room 1 and meet some of the year 5/6 students. Thanks to the Principal for finding us to say thank you. Greatly appreciated.
A short drive later we were in the beautiful township of Matatata, heading for St Joseph's, where we surprised them by arriving early. Small schools are great as you get to know children on a whole different level, more one on one. We were blessed to be given a tour of the school by the amazing, bubbly and dedicated Principal, and learnt the history of the school. Thanks for a lovely visit and such wonderful hospitality.
When you arrive at a school to find 3 handsome young men waiting, backed up by a handsome older boy (the principal haha) then you know there is something special within. We were not disappointed as the heart of Edgecumbe Primary shines out from students to staff. It felt like being part of a family, and I think any child attending this school will be richer for the experience. Thanks for a fun, friendly and special visit.
Woodlands School sits in the hills above Opotiki, and is another beautiful place to learn. Afternoon assemblies are always harder for kids when they're feeling tired. Thanks Woodlands for being welcomimg and ready to have some fun. I got to meet a young man who'd been at another school I'd visited earlier, and that's always special. A favourite part was signing books in Mrs W's class, and all those HUGS! I also got to read one of the boy's stories, and it was great!
As soon as we arrived at Ashbrook Primary School, and I saw their gorgeous gardens, I knew I was in for something special. I think I fell in love a little bit with all those gorgeous smiling faces, and that was just the teachers haha, the kids were amazing. Everyone really got into my poetry as they learnt it's great to read and succeed. They sang for Les and me, and wow, wow, wow what an amazing job they did. I was blown away. Thanks for everything from start to finish.
Good morning Kutarere School. What a setting to work in all day and learn. Nestled next to the beautiful harbour, I wanted to stay all day and write. It might be a small school, but it's big on energy and enthusiasm. I felt so comfortable here I had to force myself to leave. Thanks to the friendly staff, and the children for giving us a lovely welcome, and a happy visit.
I found these 2 delightful 'pixies' at James St School. One came to ask me afterward how I got to be so funny. I told her I think I was born mad! I had a lovely welcome as when I got out of the car, a young man was standing waving at me. Makes you feel part of the place. The rain stopped for us to have the assembly outside. What a spirited and energetic group of excited kids. Their Duffy song was outstanding. I had a blast as I sang and danced. Thanks for the classroom time too. Loved it!
Whakatane was our destination for this round of Duffy assemblies. First stop was the terrific Te Kura O Te Paroa, and what a perfect place to begin the tour. A lot of smiley and excited faces were waiting for us as we walked through the door of the gym/hall. It didn't take long for the fun to begin as I shared some of my poems, and got the students involved. Great student leaders and fabulous staff are always a winning combination!
I left Paparoa feeling sad, but in no time I was smiling at the gorgeous views over the Kaipara harbour. I’ve never been to Tinopai before so had to check out the beaches. It was a wow moment, then we had another wow moment when we met 10 delightful children at Tinopai school, with smiles as fabulous as the view. Love these small schools and our lives are better for having visited. Thanks for a special time, you all made us feel so welcome.
Hello Paparoa School. The setting was post card picturesque, the people, tall or short, were perfect, and we were pleased to pass time there. We watched great acting stars perform and met loads of happy kids and super staff. I got to meet one of my favourite teachers ever because she’s in love with books. It was an honour to hand out all the books to such polite children. Les had to drag me away as I was ready to pitch a tent and stay for ever.
Woo hoo Kaihu Valley School, you rocked. This was the perfect place to end our day. Les and I always enjoy the smaller rural schools as they have a wonderful sense of whanau,, and the caring and the sharing is obvious. More fantastic staff which we always are grateful for. Thanks for the most incredible feedback. The kids really got into poetry and this just inspires me to keep going. We loved meeting the Molly the dog. It was great from start to finish.
Selwyn Park School was a good place to spend time before lunch. Lots of enthusiastic and smiling faces flied into the hall, I even got a wink, and they were ready for action, and action we had. I love the way the kids got involved, and how the staff encouraged them to join in. I’m always filled with warm fuzzies when children approach me after for a hug, and to talk about my poems, and share their love of writing. I even got a playground pogo stick demonstration!
Te Kopuru School was our first stop of the day, and what a brilliant place to begin. Another school with an incredibly friendly welcome, by both the Principal and AP who had a real sense of fun. The children were in the hall waiting for us, full of excitement and ready to enjoy whatever lay ahead. I had a blast after the assembly as I hung out with the year 7/8’s and we played drama games. I taught them some new ones, and they taught me one. Who won...me!
My first Duffy assembly for 2017 was at the remarkable Roscommon School. We were greeted by the wonder women in the office, and knew we were in for a rollicking good time. Both the Principal and AP were present which was great. This assembly was special as my great niece and 2 great nephews attend this school. It felt like a family occasion. Thanks for such a great assembly, loved the power point about books and reading. We met some amazing kids and staff. WeI loved all the children that came and asked for hugs. I'd love to come back, you were brilliant.
The last school of the tour, 'Matakana Island' was always going to be special. As you travel by barge, we got to spend most of the day with staff and students. We had a tour of the island first, before arriving at school on a freezing morning. A soon as we met the children their smiles warmed our hearts. What an interesting lifestyle. I loved watching the children practising for an upcoming kapa haka competition. Their energy and pride shone out..
The last assembly of the day is always the one where the energy levels can flag, well not at fantastic Paengaroa School. Wow, wow wow. As soon as we walked in and heard the singing, energy levels were boosted. It was hijinx, (from me,) and laughter from start to finish. We got to sing, dance and act before handing out the books. It was like our very own production. There was another special guest present, Robyn from Mainfreight, their sponsor. From memory this is only the second time we’ve met a sponsor. I got to answer questions, got told I’m funny and beautiful by a 5 year old bless her. We had a social chat in the staff room, and almost had to be asked to leave.
Next it was Te Puke Primary, and I’d been excited to visit since reading their website. I wasn't disappointed as from the moment we arrived there was a sense of fun. It was a tricky venue, with a lot of children who were full of laughter and so responsive. I chatted with a year ¾ class, shared their books, and of course got a lot of hugs. What great kids, asking questions, wanting to look at my books, and just be a part of it all. The staff were magnifico!
At Arataki School we received a warm welcome from the principal, who hosted us for the entire assembly. I love seeing talented young school leaders showing us they are the leaders of the future. I had the chance to thank one of their teachers as he’d made a difference in the life of one of our whanau. I read a fabulous book written by year 2 students, then spent time hanging out in a senior class. When one boy found out how old I am, he said, “Wow, you’ve got a lot of energy for someone that old!” hahahaha
Greerton Village School was another example of outstanding young school leaders running the assembly. The waiata was impressive, in fact everything was.The principal came out to meet us, along with Bella and Kaiser, two fluffy white dogs that spend their days at school working with students. We’re told children can’t wait to get to school to see 'their' dogs. I enjoyed time talking about writing and answering questions Thanks Shona :)
Merivale School in Tauranga was where this tour began. It’s always good to be greeted with smiles. It was a small but lively assembly. The children were fully engaged and full of life. I was really pleased to meet Mr B, a stupendous teacher. I got to talk to some of the students, including a boy who has has his own youtube channel. The staff were great, and thanks Dayle for your time and enthusiasm.
St Joseph’s School was awesome from start to finish. Kids all ready to be totally involved from my first sentence. They’d been looking at my website, and were bursting with excitement. The staff were so incredibly bubbly and supportive of everything that was going on. More hugs which I love, plus time in 2 classrooms. I enjoy this as I get to interact on a more personal level. I heard some amazing writing from the senior class, and heard the two winning poems from the year 3/4 recent poetry competitions. The day was finished off with a social chat in the staff room. Loved this place.
Waimata School was a great place to hang out for a while. With only about 90 students it was one of those great country schools with a very welcoming feel to it. I had a special moment before I left, when a senior student came up to tell me that he really liked my poem about the Driving Lesson, as he thought it was really funny, and thanked me for being there. That was one of those special moments that sometimes happens during a Duffy visit. There were some gorgeous kids, and I got lots of lovely hugs. Thanks to the staff for being so welcoming. It was and an all round super duper visit.
Waihi East, wow is the word needed for this visit. I was sad Ms Coll wasn't there, as she was the reason I went to Waihi. We were greeted by the principal, which was really appreciated. What a fun school with lots of laughs, which were well recorded by budding photographers. I love it when I have time to visit classrooms, this time it was two and they were special. The student leaders who showed us around and looked after us were absolutely brilliant. I’d love to come back, and look forward to making a plan.
Waihi Central School was our next stop, and this was another case of a warm welcome to make up for the freezing cold outside. What great kids, full of energy and enthusiasm, ready for whatever came next. The photo is of a young man I met again the next day, and apparently I am one of the funniest people he’s met. He made my day. I loved that school remembered to sing the Duffy song, as it's one of my favourites. I enjoyed a short classroom visit, and those are always special, as I get a chance to connect with children on a different level. The friendly staff helped make this a rewarding visit.
We arrived at Karangahake School in pouring rain to be greeted by three young men, and one was called Rhain, a name that matched the weather! Small country schools always have a family feel where the seniors look after the juniors. This was a great way to start, and when I finished, a young man asked me, “please can you read some more of your books to us?” How could I say no, so it was fun reading till lunch. Thanks for asking me back, can’t wait!
Time for Duffy books tours again. My first for this round wasn't too far away from home at Deanwell School in Hamilton. A lot of enthusiastic children entered the hall ready for whatever fun lay in store. I loved their singing, and had fun with my pretend microphone, seeing some of the children joining in heartily. It was good the seniors got back in time to hear some of my poetry, and get involved in the fun. What a great rendition of the Duffy song. Well done to the school leaders for running the assembly so well.
Mamaku School was the perfect place to end this Duffy Tour. It was so much fun from start to finish, and even the principal thought I was fun. Great student leaders who did their school proud, and some of the best dancers I've come across. One thing though, I've never made anyone sick at an assembly before. Hope he was all right. :)
Thanks Ngongotaha School especially Whaea Lesley for such a friendly and warm welcome, and Mr Anderson for the dance. The school has a real family feel about it. The youth leaders did a great job, aided by the juniors at running the assembly. The students all got involved and were full of energy and fun. It was a special time in Whaea Lesley's class at lunchtime. Once again lots of hugs for both Les and me.
Murupara Area School is an amazing brand new school where the children are blessed to have teachers who are so friendly and welcoming. As I had a bit of time, we tried some drama, and I created mayhem and left the teachers to sort it out, oops. I LOVED that some of the students had been reading my poems, and they asked me to read them so they could hear how I said them. But one of the best things was the four boys who had not only learnt one of my poems, but put actions to it. They showed that poetry does rock!
The drive to Kaingaroa Forest School is a very picturesque part of the country. This was my smallest Duffy assembly yet, (by 2) with a role of only ten students. Six boys and three girls were in school today, and it was their Principal’s last day before retiring. With small schools the neat part is I get to hand out all the individual books. My favourite part was the costume box, when the kids found hats and wigs and we decided to create a moment and get dressed up for photos. Great fun and these would be my favourite Duffy photos.
you Whangamarino School would have to be one of the most beautiful locations set right on the lake shore. I was sad to miss the seniors as they were away, but I did have fun with the juniors and a few brilliant senior students who joined in. Here’s a fact for you – the Principal grew up in Te Kuiti where I used to live and I remember his Mum and Dad! Thanks Whaea Tiria for loving my books because they are full of every day kiwi language. Gotta love those scary faces!
We walked into the hall at Owhata School to be treated to the most beautiful singing full of energy. Then the fun began as Matua Shaun, one of the DP’s began to misbehave. Being a Drama Queen that only made me sillier and we became a bit of a double comedy act. I also found a young Drama King who was brilliant. I enjoyed spending time in two classes, and hearing Haley’s poem, before performing ‘Humpty Dumpty’ with super duper students who knew it off by heart.
Well Selwyn Primary, what a great place to begin a Duffy tour. Whaea Merenia should be cloned she’s so great. Gifted school leaders ran the assembly, and I was absolutely thrilled when one young man performed one of my poems for the assembly. I felt honoured. I had a little dance with Mr Allen, and after assembly visited his class and discovered that he's actually met Roald Dahl. Wow that's pretty amazing. He also told me he teaches the best looking class ever! I called in on the amazing students in Room 1 and discovered they use my website regularly. Good choice Room 1 haha. A big thank you to Whaea Claire and her class also. A great school.
When you get to the last school energy levels can flag, but you couldn't be anything but excited and positive at Rotorua Primary. A school with real personalities like the teacher I nicknamed Whaea Trouble as she was so much fun. Not to mention Matua Miu who danced with me, and Rachael's enthusiasm. What great kids I met here as I signed books and arms. Some even hung around during lunch to talk to me. It was as someone said supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
I've been to Sunset School before, so was really excited to return. When I walk into this school I feel such a warmth, as if I belong. Whaea Prue told me her class were very excited I was to be their Duffy role model. I was described by one of her students as the 'funny lady.' haha. I had a friend come to the assembly as well so was like family time. The kids were into everything with great gusto. Then I got to spend time in 2 classrooms which all added to my fabulous time.
Mayhem at Malfroy Primary was created by.... yes it was me. Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. The energy in this school started with DP Jennie who is one of the most delightful women I've ever met. Wendy ran the assembly with equal enthusiasm. The kids were into everything and I loved it. I also spent time with their young writers group. When in the supermarket later a young girl called out "Judi," told me I'd been funny and introduced me to her Mum! Loved it.
The Seventh Day Adventist primary school was next on the agenda. There is something unique about small schools, and this one has a lovely feel where students displayed a special Christian based attitude of caring and sharing with a sense of fun. It had a family feel, and I even got to enjoy a dance with one of their dads. They were so excited to get their books, which was a delight to watch. Thanks to the staff for a great visit, and the prayer for us which was appreciated.
Whakarewarewa School staff and students filled my heart with joy. A stunning location which somehow exudes this incredible feeling of peace and contentment. You could feel the history in these buildings. This is a school full of super kids who enjoyed themselves as they got fully involved singing and joining in with my performance. The love for the students shone out in this school. Thanks for all the hugs I got, they were so special.
I do love small country schools. Horohoro School is in the most superb location, and as soon as we pulled up I wanted to get inside. We received one of the warmest welcomes ever with big hugs from the staff. The children were so responsive and seeing senior boys engaged in the fun of language was a real buzz. One of the older boys suddenly came out with, "Judi, you're funny. You're a crack up." Loved having the chance to visit the junior class and have some fun.
Here we come Aorangi School! I don't always get to meet school principals, and it was so nice to have Debra greet us personally and be so fully involved in the Duffy assembly. When we walked into the hall we thought it was empty, but no, the entire school were there. Such well behaved students, with fantastic staff that joined in all the fun along the way, creating a positive vibe. Loved my time in one of the junior classes sharing poems. A highlight of my time away, was the young man who did a medieval type flurried bow, waving his hat as he said, "Judi you are fabulous!" He made my day.
Te kura te Koutu was our first stop for 2016 Duffy Books tour. What a great start it was with a fabulous welcome song. The photo shows we had a bit of fun along the way. The students were vibrant group, and their excitement was heart warming. I was impressed with the school leaders and the oratory skills of the young man who thanked us. A bonus was getting to spend time in the English class after the assembly and share about books and writing with them all.
DUFFY BOOKS TOURS 2015
Even though we were tired, we headed up the Coromandel road. What a glorious trip to stunnning Manaia Harbour, for our last stop. We left completely rejuvenated after a rousing welcome and assembly. I’ve never seen kids laugh and cheer so much. Te Wharekura o Manaia you warmed our hearts. What a pleasure it was meeting you all. Ka Kite Ano.
Paeroa Central is a pretty special school. Their principal sums up their school by saying they don’t need a website, as her students are the best example of who and what they are. I loved that they started my visit off with the Duffys song which always gives me a smile. So many smiling faces in one room has to be good for the soul and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I got to hang out for a while in the Senior class and share some of their writing, and get to know some of the students a little better. A great time.
Wednesday dawned cold and windy. But when you get such a warm reception as Tirohia School give, the outside weather is soon forgotten. I had a blast, and suddenly the time had flown by. The students made a fabulous audience, and enjoyed all my poems. I spent time in each classroom after assembly and was honoured to have some children share their writing with me. I got a second visit two days later when dropping books off, and it was just as fabulous as the first time. It was a school I felt comfortable in, and that's to such a friendly principal and outgoing staff. Thanks for everything. Can’t wait to get back.
Kerepehi School was next on the agenda, and what a wonderful laid back assembly. We enjoyed a laugh with the staff, before being introduced to this great group of students. We danced and sang while the Duffys song played. A highlight for me, was meeting Hamish, who along with his wife, sponsors Kerepehi school. What a good sport Hamish was, as he joined in the actions and singing also. It was a lovely surprise, when he told me that was the most energetic and entertaining Duffys assembly he’s ever been to. It was a fun and spontaneous visit.
St Joseph’s Paeroa was my first stop on this Duffy’s tour. I received a friendly welcome from the principal which always sets the right mood. A highlight was catching up with an old drama student whose son goes to St Joseph’s. The children were wonderfully well behaved, and appreciative of their books. I was lucky to get some pretty special compliments, which are always a delight. Thanks St Joseph’s for a great time, and lunch the following day was a pleasant surprise.
Thanks for having me Te Kura O Hirangi at Turangi, and giving me the chance to meet all your primary students. I was impressed with the beautifully decorated Duffy Books boxes, It was hard judging the best one. The highlight for me was the wonderful singing and the rousing haka at the end. It was great to give a book away to one of the junior students for her super duper manners. We had a rushed assembly so I didn't get lots of time, but enjoyed my time after in the library
Thank you Mountview School in Taupo for a wonderful Duffy Books assembly. As soon as I arrived I knew it was going to be great. Thank you for your respect and friendliness. I loved singing the Duffy song with you all, and to my special friend for being such a good sport, (she will know who she is!) I got to spend some quality time with the senior class discussing writing, and look forward to getting some of their work. That was followed by one of the most awesome class visits I've ever had. Thank you Room 6 - you rock.
Pukenui, Te Kuiti, is a school I've been before, and always find the teachers fun and positive. This Duffys visit was no exception. The kids joined in enthusiastically when required. I was lucky to have talented helpers. I got to spend time in some classrooms after the assembly, and I always enjoy that as I get to know students a little more. One of our grandies started school here on the very day of my Duffys visit. What a treat. The school leaders were stars, and I told one, her Grandma and i are old friends. A very special visit, thanks for everything.
Te Kuiti Primary was my next step. As I lived in Te Kuiti for 22 years, and worked at TKP for 5 years, it was like going home for me. I even got to share the day with my daughter and youngest grandy. What well behaved students you have. The staff were also extremely welcoming. Highlights were, the enthusiasm of the children, dancing to the Duffy song, my introduction which was amazing, and the spontaneous haka done at the end of the assembly. Thanks TKP for a great time.
How wonderful on a wet Monday morning to be greeted by so many cheery faces at Centennial Park School, Te Kuiti. Highlights for me were catching up with an old friend who still teaches there. Meeting Daane who has her own copy of one of my books which she brought along. She told me she is my biggest fan. (I'm hers too.) Giving some books away in the playground after school to some CP students, who told me they liked my poems because they're funny and they hope I go back one day.
After a hectic week, I was a bit tired, but then I walked in the door at Firth Primary, Matamata, and my energy levels rose instantly. What a fabulous school! From the moment we arrived it felt like one big dose of warm fuzzies. What lucky students to have such amazing teachers and staff. The kids enthusiastic response to my poems was inspiring. They reminded me this is what it is all about for me - fantastic kids. I enjoyed meeting some of you after the assembly. Thanks, and I just know I'll be back.
Bishop Edward Gaines Primary School is a school of reading and musical champions. After the Duffy song the students sang us the rainbow song - what a great choice for Rainbow Poetry. Small schools have that special feel about them, and this was no different. Great staff, great kids, excitement galore, lots of smiles, dancing and good vibes. They loved their books. Les and I both felt blessed to have met these amazing children, and their teachers. We will go back!
At Tainui Full Primary we received a formal welcome. Two school leaders did a great job of introducing us. For a big school, they were a brilliant audience, joining in, listening and being respectful. I don't have favourites, but your senior boys stole my heart. Their willingness to be involved was outstanding. Highlights were, being asked to go into their class and share their writing. All the hugs I got. Great staff who I'm sure are proud of their amazing students.
Central School. This was some of the students aiting for us in the hall. They were so quiet we didn't think anyone was there. Their behaviour was excellent. They joined in and enjoyed my poems, laughed and encouraged me to be sillier. We visited some classrooms and shared their new books. A big thank you to the staff for such a positive attitude. No wonder your kids are brilliant. I want to come back and bowl a ball down that corridor!
After leaving Whakamaru, we headed off to the busy little town of Mangakino, where we found the most brilliant cafe, to grab a drink before visiting Mangakino School. What an excellent venue we had to use for the Duffy assembly. The younger children enjoyed my 'Little Mr Kiwi' rhyme, and all chuckled their way through 'The Driving Lesson' poem, pictured left. We then visited some of the classrooms where we got to talk to some of the children one on one, and sign a few books, which was very special to share their fun. A highlight was when a teacher commented it had been a wonderful assembly. I've already had a message on my blog suggesting I go back one day for another visit.
Whakamaru School the school where Les almost broke the camera as he took so many photos. This was a case of another friendly welcome. The assembly was a great success, and the children loved getting their books.
A highlight was seeing the children's pleasure in poetry.
I loved spending time in the senior classroom and meeting the children individually. Then I got to catch up with other students during their lunch time. I was able to answer questions, and talk about books. I signed their books, and even some arms.......quite a lot of them actually. Then it was photo shoot time. Thank you for having us Whakamaru, it was awesome, from every student to every staff member.
I hope to see you all again sometime.

Strathmore School - what can I say?
We had a supercalifragilistic visit. It started as soon we walked into the office to be greeted by their own office leprechaun in her rather flash green hat for St Patrick's Day. We were blown away by the outstanding behaviour, and loved how everyone got so involved. One of the highlights for me, was at the end when I asked if the kids thought poetry was fun, they all cheered. I was on a roll, so followed that with, "Would you like to read more of my poetry books?" Once again that got a resounding yes. I even got invited into the junior class (room 9) to help them write their own poem. I hope Miss Stewart enjoyed it. The positivity of all the staff is the very thing that keeps me doing what I do. Anytime you want me, I'll be back.

Then we were off to David Henry Primary School in Tokoroa, with no idea of what a friendly welcome was ahead of us. it's a small school, and was a very personal experience. We danced, we sang, we laughed. and we had a fabulous time together. I went into some of the classrooms afterwards, and a highlight was having children asking to hear more of my poems. Their interaction during my speaking/performing time was great. Thanks to everyone.
Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa o Patetere was our second stop of the day. It was a wet and windy day and what a treat to find such a modern and comfortable new school. It was nice to meet the kids and welcoming staff. The highlight was being taken on a tour of the school after the assembly finished, and to see the up to date environment these lucky children get to learn in on a daily basis. They will do well with all the resources available to them. Thanks to their Principal and staff for giving us their time.
Putaruru Primary got the Duffy Books tour off to a great start. Les and I were lead into the hall by two student leaders and their DP. The children all stood and faced the main aisle, and as we walked through they sang 'Haere Mai.' It was sung with such emotion, and I told everyone that it had given me goose bumps. It was a stand out highlight of the tour. Neither Les nor I will ever forget that moment.
What a fabulous group of kids and staff. Their enthusiasm for everything I did was greatly appreciated. Seeing their delight at getting their books was a sheer joy. Thank you for having me Putaruru Primary School, I'd love to come back sometime.

DUFFY ASSEMBLIES SEPTEMBER 2014
Haha Pukemiro juniors, they had to pull scary faces while I read them one of my poems. Didn't they do well! I loved this school, and thank you to you all for such a fabulous Duffy Books visit. I loved seeing your delight at getting your own books, and also how much you enjoyed my poems. Remember to keep in contact, as I'd love to see you all again.
I keep saying the next school can't be as good, then they prove me wrong, like Huntly West Primary. Thanks to the principal, staff and school leaders for a fabulous welcome, and the entire school for a great visit. Les came with me and we both had a wonderful time. You have a great school, and I hope you enjoy my books. Keep in touch. We got some great photos.
St Anthony's Huntly - what can I say? It was a blast from start to finish. I had the best time ever. When I go back to school I'm going to St Anthony's. Thanks to all the fabulous staff, (Miss Cook is my new best friend) and all you gorgeous kids. We had so much fun that I want to return soon. Good luck with your speeches. Here is the special video we did for Duffys. You might need to play it twice for sound quality.
Thanks for such a cheery welcome Huntly Primary. I enjoyed sharing some of my poems with you and talking about how we need to read to succeed. I was pleased to give away 2 of my books to special students. One for the biggest hello smile I've ever seen, and the other for the best acted out Duffy song. Huntly Primary, you sure can sing! Thanks teachers.
Hauturu School proved that no matter where I go there are fabulous staff and children waiting to enjoy their Duffy assembly. I felt surrounded by smiles and enthusiasm. I enjoyed sharing my poems, then handing out the Duffy books, once again to excitement and delight. Some wanted to share their writing with me, and I was honoured to read it. Thank you Hauturu.
Kawhia Primary School was next. The town knew I was coming it seemed, and thank you for making me feel a little famous for a while. Heather was the smiling face that greeted me, and the smiles went on and on. I loved seeing the kids take their books and find a quiet place to start reading. I gave away a couple of my books as well. You live in a beautiful place.
Otorohanga Primary you stole a little piece of my heart. The welcome from staff and students was warm and inviting. I enjoyed the question time and sharing about my work, including the question, "When did you get your ears pierced?" It was the perfect place to kick off my Duffy's road trip. We had fun and a lot of laughs. I can't wait to get back to see you.
DUFFY ASSEMBLIES APRIL 2014
Horotiu was the perfect school to finish with. I walked into the hall and didn't think anyone was there they were so quiet. The sense of fun was there from the beginning, and stayed throughout the whole visit. The atmosphere shouted out 'welcome Judi, come and have fun. A special thank you to Miss Grant's class for the opportunity to present their books individually. Please invite me back again.
Ngaruawahia Primary School you sure know how to sing. Wow, wow, wow. Thanks for a great Duffy assembly, even if Steve was a hard act to follow with his singing. I was impressed with the school leader who thanked me, he has potential to be a great orator. Nothing to do with books, but that shared morning tea was a veritable feast, and I will make sure I always call in on that shared morning tea day. Thanks
Another helper got to scream a little and pretend to be Mum at Matiere School. Another great country welcome greeted Les and myself. Rosie would've loved these country schools. Matiere School are in upheaval with renovations going on, but still managed to turn on the manners, charm and excitement. Thanks Indigo for a great afternoon, nothing quite like country hospitality.
Ohura is a fascinating small village, and I left there wanting to know the history of the area. Ohura Valley Primary School is in such a picturesque location. The beauty of the area is matched by the beautiful attitude and personality of all their pupils and staff. I felt like I belonged. Like all the previous children, they were delighted to receive their books. They enjoyed my poems, and the juniors had fun acting out my 'Tahi Rua Toru' rhyme.
What a gorgeous drive to Ongarue School.Mrs Carmichael is their Principal, and she is such a good fit for this wonderful school. Amazing kids, who raised money so the whole school could go on a trip to Rarotonga. They sang a hymn for us they learnt while there. I read some of my poems, then Mrs Carmichael read me some of her favourite ones.
Benneydale School was a great visit from start to finish. Their new Principal was so pleased to welcome me into their school. My Mum used to say you learn something new every day, and I learnt that the children get a choice of which books they want. John, the junior teacher, played 'Rockin Robin' and the children sang. He then played it again and some danced with me. Check out the fun on the photo page.
Whitiora school here I come, ready or not - and they were ready. In fact they were sitting so quietly inside, I didn't even realise they were there. This morning was extra special, as I took Les with me for the first time to a Duffy's assembly. His granddaughter goes to Whitiora School, so they got to have a hug. Thanks for having me, and a special thanks to the staff who thanked me, and told me my passion in what I do, shone through. I want all these children I am meeting to grow in their love of language.
Just as I was thinking no other school can do as well, along came Nawton Primary School. It was a hot day, humid in the hall, a lot of students, (close to 400), and was I impressed. Their respect, alertness and sense of fun was evident from the moment I began. What a great environment to be in on a Tuesday morning. I loved sharing my work, and seeing your enjoyment. Thanks to your Principal, the staff I met, and especially to Jackie, who in my opinion is a legend. I would love to visit again when my next book is out.
Me, in full flight at Melville Primary School acting out my poem The Driving Lesson with a fantastic volunteer, and a fabulous audience watching. Thank you Melville for such a great time at your school, and your good manners to me as a guest. It was extra special having Scholastic there as well to share presenting the books, and listen to your wonderful rendition of the Duffy song. Your Principal greeted me like an old friend, and I reckon Mr Williams rocks!
More great kids and more welcoming staff. It was my visit to Rhode Street School yesterday where I was once again entertained by amazing singing. I loved how the teachers all stood up the front and sang the Duffy song. Mr Aim, you did well, and there's a photo to prove it! The children showed excellent manners as they received their Duffy's books. The highlight for me was being given a personal tour of the school by Marama and Amelia. Amelia was my host and what a brilliant job she did. Her pride in her school shone through. I asked what she likes most about her school, and she told me that while the kids have a say in what happens, they also have to play a part in getting things done, and not just rely on the teachers.
Then it was off to St Pius School where I was met by the Principal and Paula, who had me laughing and feeling comfortable in no time. I was once again entertained by fabulous singing. Their music teacher had them rocking the hall. We had fun doing my poem 'The Driving Lesson,' (pictured). Thanks to my excellent volunteer. The school leaders who welcomed and farewelled me were amazing. I was impressed by their maturity. Then we had fun and handed out the Duffy books. A great visit to a school where it does feel as if you're in the country as it's in such a lovely setting.
These faces say it all. Thank you Whakawatea for such a fabulous visit. It just can't get better than this. Can it? These students enthralled and delighted me from the moment I met them. Their singing, their happy faces, their manners, and their delight in receiving their books. They are a credit to their teachers. I hope to be invited back and have the chance to work with these students again in the future.
Wouldn't you know it, the good stories just keep coming. Crawshaw School got off to a good start. As I was walking to the hall for assembly. I heard children calling out 'Whaea Judi," "Whaea Judi's here," and there were the delightful children from Room 9 who it turns out have been reading 'Granny Does The Boogey' in class, and thoroughly enjoying it. Thank you Mrs Baker for your enthusiasm. The assembly was fabulous with some more great singing, and some more book awards presented, to the children pictured. I also noticed some fabulous poems written by Room 10 students - what a talented class. The school is lucky to have Mrs Littlewood as Principal. She is so friendly and caring.
Fairfield Primary School Each time I leave a school I think the next one can't possibly be as good. Fairfield proved me wrong again. I was met by Whaea Donna who greeted me like an old friend. We crossed the road to the excellent Fairfield Intermediate theatre. I couldn't believe how quiet and well behaved the children were as they waited for the whole school to arrive. I met Mr Newton the DP who I thought was pretty cool. The kids sang the National Anthem with real feeling. I did my thing, telling the kids how great books are, then presented some special book awards. Great school, great staff and great students.
What a fabulous time I had at Ngati Haua total immersion school at Pukemoremore, just out of Cambridge. The school has an amazing setting in the hills, the sun was shining, and the smiles that greeted me, all added to the magic of the morning. I loved seeing the children's excitement at getting their books.

Forest lake School was brilliant from the moment I walked in the door, until I left. The students all looked so smart, and had very impressive manners. Their singing was absolutely roof raising fantastic. Their school leaders did an excellent job of looking after me. Sadly I didn't think about photos until after I'd been to Forest lake School, but maybe I'll be invited back again and we can take some.
Insoll Ave School was my very first Duffy Assembly. I had no idea what to expect. It was great to be invited into the school. I loved the welcome the children gave me by singing. They were interactive, and always ready to answer a question. I had one of my favourite moments here when I asked how Harry Potter began. A little 5 year old's hand shot up in the air. I was impressed he knew, and asked him for the answer. Quick as a wink he replied, "As a babv!" The answer I wanted was as a book, but he was quite right. I didn't have the camera with me, so sadly I don't have photos of the school assembly.
