Stanhope Rd Primary a school of young legends and incredible teachers. I was lucky to be asked to come along and share my poetry with everyone. The juniors were so well behaved, and then the seniors came along and were just as 'cool.' We all had fun and shared a lot of laughs. We also discovered some special new acting talent. A highlight was when some of the year 5 students asked if I was coming back. Yay I say!

School productions are starting to take place, and as you might know, I love productions. I get to see my characters come to life on stage which is rewarding. So far this term Les and I have seen 'Break'a'Leg performed three times, once in Dunedin at Globe Theatre, a few weeks ago at Hautapu School, and last week at St Joseph's, Te Kuiti. The photo is of my granddaughter in one of the awards scenes. What talented actors there are, and great seeing audiences and cast enjoying themselves. I was delighted when some of the performers came to tell me how much they enjoyed the characters they got to act on stage. Thank you.

It's that time of year again when speeches are being presented all around the country. Two weeks ago, Les and I were lucky enough to hear the talented speakers at Hautapu School, and I got the tough job of judging them. Every year I'm amazed at the incredible topics children come up with, and this year was no different. From ice cream to Wellington, to human rights and so much more. I also have to mention the staff who direct their students to write such comprehensive speeches.
2024

Yes, I was finally back in schools after a tough old year getting my engine and blocked fuel lines sorted.
Waikato Waldorf School was a perfect place to be doing this. The children were amazing, as were their teachers. They certainly brought their sense of humour along with them, as they were ready to laugh and shriek and just enjoy my poetry. The thought of Dad in his speedos created great amusement.
I then spent a little time in two classes, and you know how much I enjoy doing that. It was brilliant. Thank you!

The next day I popped into Te Kuiti Primary School to help judge their junior speeches. Wow, wow, wow is all I can say! Well I'll also say it was well organised, the kids were fantastic, and I was so impressed at the efforts of even the most junior of students. I loved every minute of it.
Rangitoto School, a wonderful rural school just out of Te Kuiti, asked me to go and give them some help with their upcoming school production. What fun we had, and I was so happy to be back helping schools and working with children.
I am so out of practice that I forgot to get some photos of my first two school visits for the year. But I'll get better I promise.
Here I am finally in 2023.

Once a year drama students gather to perform at the Te Awamutu Performing Arts festival. What a blessing it is to be involved running this weekend, seeing children sharing their talent for others to enjoy. Poetry, prose readings, acting monologues and in groups, and a favourite is always the improvisation class. I get to hear a lot of my poetry performed which warms my heart knowing children enjoy my work. Here is a picture of me (the kit kats were to give away) our brilliant adjudicator, and the awesome Dean from Whanganui.

Hello Hautapu Primary School, after what seemed like forever since I'd visited. It was speeches time, and anyone who knows me, knows how much I enjoy listening to children presenting their speeches, and once again I wasn't to be disappointed. This school always delivers on well written work, and a wide range of topics that make the audience think, feel sad and have a few chuckles. The seniors were great, but there are some outstanding juniors close on their heels. I know the next few years will provide some tough 'battles of words' on stage. :)

Yet again, someone (called me) forgot to get a photo, so this is an old one when I found my name on a authors board with famous people haha. This morning I was lucky to head to to Pukete School and help judge their talent quest. What fun seeing these young performers, sing, dance, do gymnastics, and play the violin. Wow what awesome talent we were blessed to watch, and we were in no doubt that some are destined for stardom. It was great to be back. :)

I'm so out of practice visiting schools, that I keep forgetting to get a photo of something or someone far more interesting than a programme! This week I had a long but rewarding day at St Peter's Cambridge, judging all their speech and drama awards. From Prep through to seniors performing poetry, prose, acting, improv, speeches and story telling. The decisions were hard to make at times with tight competition in some classes. Great to see young actors performing on a big stage. Well done.

I forgot to get a photo, so here's the view from where we stayed, close to ACG Parnell. Lots of inspiration to write about from the boats, people and dogs out walking, to the melodious tuis outside our room. This time it was year 5 and 6 students who all turned up ready to have fun and enjoy poetry. I even found an awesome Frankenstein, Dracula and Little Red. Thanks ACG.

WHOOP WHOOP my first school visit in a year, and I couldn't have been asked to a better school than the fantabulous Sunnyhills in Pakuranga. All the year 3 and 4 students came along to learn how to perform their own poems, and what better way to learn how, than having this Drama Queen perform hers for them. It was great to be back. Here is Les waiting for the kids to arrive. Yay!
2022
After the lockdowns at the end of last year, I managed a few online sessions with schools, like the fabulous Willow Park in Auckland, then it was a sad time for me as no schools visits allowed. I recently did a fun online session with a class from David Henry School in Tokoroa, and then yesterday.......drum roll please....I've had my first 'live school visits' for one whole year.

The Te Awamutu Performing Arts Festival was on 2/3 Oct, and guess what? We did it before lockdown hit, sadly without the Aucklanders. Over 35 talented young actors strutting their stuff on stage! Add an incredible judge, google Kahurangi Carter, whanau and it was a blast. Poetry, plays, readings, improvised storytelling and plays and it was drama heaven. This is 4 of my students performing their play, 'Will the real murderer....' Who was it? I know :)

I do love 'speech season' in schools, along with poetry finals. Recently I was invited to be a part of Hautapu School finals, and I wasn't disappointed in the standard of their talented young performers. The topics kids come up with to speak about never ceases to amaze me. Public speaking is such an important skill to have in life, and one of the things most adults dread, so huge applause to their kids who just get on with it. Well done everyone.

Small rural schools are always fun, and Rangitoto was brilliant from beginning to end. Just look at the picturesque setting, who wouldn't be happy. They're doing one of my scripts, and I was along to help out with performance tips. They've got this though! We had a lot of fun, great kids, a 10 out of 10 principal, laughs in the staffroom and who'd want to leave? Not me, we almost had to be kicked out haha. Loved my time here.

At least when we're in level 2, school visits can happen. I was delighted to be asked to judge the poetry and speech finals in the junior school at St Joseph's in Te Kuiti this week. Four finalists in each group performed their amazing poem or speech, with expression and real enjoyment, one poem was even written by me! This clever young student. Miss M, couldn't find exactly what she wanted, so wrote her own poem, with some help from mum to put it together. How impressive was that. I thought she was amazing. After lunch I ran a small drama group, which meant more talented children.

Yesterday was a busy day, as I began at St Peter Chanel in Te Rapa preparing for their upcoming poetry and speech presentations. My day ended at Te Kowhai School judging poetry and speeches across the school. Wow what talent the audience egot to hear. Some lively, expressive poems were followed by the year 4 to 8 speeches. I'm always fascinated by the range of topics, and last night was no different. From having a yes day, to our oceans, electric vehicles, autism, tiktok, unusual names, if I were principal, and the list goes on. A great night right before lockdown. :)

Here are the three excited year 6 students from Te Kowhai School, who will be presenting their speeches next week to an enthusiastic audience. It was great to listen to their introductions and conclusions, and see how their speeches are shaping up. Public speaking is such an important tool to give our children, as so many adults are terrified to speak in front of an audience. Not these three, they were ready and raring to go.

Like parents, I'm not allowed favourites, but Te Kowhai School is a place I love spending time. Today I got to help students across the school, who've been selected for the school poetry and speech finals next week. I've worked with some of these children for a few years now, and seeing their growth gives me absolute pleasure. I helped the junior school with their poems, how lucky am I, and how clever are they! :)

Lots of excited and fabulous children were waiting for me at St Peter Chanel School, all ready for a poetry performance. We had plenty of laughs as the children joined in along the way. What superstars they were. If that wasn't enough fun, I then got to help three classrooms with their speech and poetry performances. I'll be back next week in three more classrooms. What fun!

Ever wondered what weightlifters look like when they're young?Haha this was some of the year 5 students at Pukete School, during their drama workshops this week. We had a few break out moments doing our own 'Slo Mo Olympics,' meaning slow motion. We had running, rowing and swimming as well, which created a lot of laughs and hilarious facial expressions. Drama is the best!

Term 3 started with a visit Te Kuiti Primary where I ran stagecraft workshops with the cast of their upcoming production, 'The Mystery Of The Tomo.' It's extra special as I've written it for them. We had a lot of laughs, while learning about what's needed to create believable characters. TKP has a special place in my heart as I used to work there.

Well done Te Kowhai School on such an awesome production. I was in my element helping out with the stagecraft side of things, giving you guidance with acting skills and all that goes with it. You just got better and better. The shows were brilliant. What a bunch of superstars, you are along with your wonderful director Mrs N. I loved being involved.

After a full on week, Saturday and Sunday took on a whole different shape, when 'Judge Judi' stepped into the arena of speech and drama competitions, at the Hamilton Performing Arts festival. For two full days, I was blessed to hear young performers sharing their skills in poetry, reading and acting. I was able to share my experience, by offering advice to help them in their journey. Our speech certainly is our oral passport through life. Photo is with the senior speech winner.

What an incredible three days I've had at fabulous Te Kuiti Primary. We've been busy with drama workshops, a poetry performance for the juniors, and auditions for their upcoming production, 'The Mystery of the Tomo.' I wrote it for school and can't wait to see it come alive on stage. TKP certainly is a school of drama legends. I've loved watching some students grow in confidence over the last few days. Thanks everyone. I'll be back!

Now for something different. I had the best of times at Dinsdale Kindergarten. I haven't visited an early childhood centre for ages, but it was so much fun. The kids were well behaved and ready to enjoy what I had to share. I read some of my books & poems and they got into acting them out. Then we made up an imaginary animal - a dolphog - it had 24 eyes, 2 heads and eats fish and seaweed.Wow!

With a Pirate, Paper Bag Princess and Count Dracula for company fun was never far away. Raglan Area School was a laugh a minute, made extra special by sharing the day with friend and amazing author Sarah Johnson. Everything was fabulous, kids, staff, awesome librarian and year 10 students who helped out. It was a day of poetry and storybook fun from start to finish. Jack Sparrow beware! Count Dracula is after your tasty neck!

The drive in heavy rain and a chaotic motorway, was forgotten as soon as I stepped inside St Kentigerns Girls' School. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which made for a perfect visit. The day was all about poetry writing, and the enthusiasm was engaging.
One writer compared a roller coaster to her throat when eating a lolly! How brilliant is that. I loved the idea. Thank you everyone :)

What a great sight to see as we 'hit' Taranaki. Stratford On Stage were performing 'Cinderfeller Hits Field Days' at their perfectly sized little theatre, The Castle. They invited us along for the show and for the after party. We're always up for a bit of a fun time, and weren't disappointed. Great show, with a dedicated cast and crew. So pleased that we could make it. Job well done SOS :)

There was time for one more visit before we left Gisborne. Luckily I know the fabulous principal at St Mary’s Catholic School, so knock, knock and she let us in. It was the perfect way to finish this tour. The children all brought their best manners, chuckles, and sense of fun. Their energy was contagious making for an enjoyable time. I was invited to do some writing in a junior class, so that was what we did. Everyone was awesome! :)

What a way to start, at the fabulous Glen Massey School. Today was all about writing, and finding ways to improve storytelling. I always like to use drama games, and here are some of the kids having fun going fishing. Can you see what they’ve done with the marlin? Yes, it’s being cooked on the bbq. How funny is that. Some great writing, fun drama games and cool kids.
2021 HAS BEGUN

Just when you thought the year was over and there would be no more speeches, I can say SURPRISE - Hukanui School are having their finals this week. Yesterday I got to spend time with their extremely talented finalists, giving them a few tips and tricks for performance on the big night. This photo was from last year, with a young man I know rather well. Hmmm we wonder who will impress the judges the most!

Maniapoto Arts Festival 'Hurt to Healing, in Te Kuiti. What an incredible event to be part of as the community came together to watch, learn and share. I was blessed to be asked to perform poetry for local schools. A highlight was running a drama workshop with my oldest daughter, and three grandies were involved. Tiring but worth it.

I finally got to Ardmore School, after a few false starts due to Covid! The kids were ready for fun, and fun we had. I performed some new poems, and my favourite was Les chasing 'The Big Bad Wolf' around the hall! Go Les! I ran a writing workshop with keen writers, and that's something I always enjoy. Great students and brilliant teachers are the perfect combo for success. I appreciated the students who thanked me personally for visiting. :)

What better way to spend the day before Halloween than at fantastic Te Ao Marama School. Thanks Whaea Sarah for inviting me, and having such fun kidlets to hang out with and share poetry with. They were all very brave. Les and I had to be brave too, as there were three witches in the room, and a pirate! I got to read some 'Scary Tales' poems, and even a few new ones like 'What's In My Bath?' Why, it's a .............. shark of course. Everyone needs a shark in their bath! Don't they? Evil laugh....

Rotokauri School, where they don't teach giraffes, but you see them as you drive past Hamilton Zoo. A place that is as awesome as the classroom that I got to hang out in for a while this morning. Thanks so much for letting me spend time with you, sharing some of my books and poetry. Then we had a good old chat about writing, and where we can get our ideas. Wow you sure have a lot of cats in your families, hope they don't know about Ralph!

Time for school holiday fun. What better place to kickstart than the fabulous Braid Rd library. What fabulous kids arrived for petrifying and scary fun. They got to hear me share some creepy poetry, like having a shark in the bath! Count Dracula even rang me while I was in the middle of a poem, and told the children he was looking for some tasty necks. How creepy is that. Every child got a monster name too. 'Hairynose' was my favourite.

Last weekend was something quite different, as Les and I headed an hour south for a weekend of live theatre. Nothing quite like it! Te Kuiti's Onstage community theatre group, put on another one of my shows, 'Fiasco In The Forest', with a complete cast of children and teenagers. Quite an achievement for any director. These were awesome times. Seeing the story unfold with audience involvement was great fun. Seeing five of our grandchildren perform was a special highlight!

Hautapu School speeches 2020. Another year of talented students with great topics, from the serious, to the funny, and the thoughtful to the quirky. Every year I am impressed by what children come up with to talk about. I always leave knowing more than when I arrived, and that's got to be a good thing. Here I am with three of the finalists, and one of them was the winner!

For the third year in a row I got to spend time over three weeks at Pukete School, lending a hand with their production, directed by Mrs Andersen. I give them some acting tips, and get all bossy and push them along to be their best, and best they were, brilliant in fact. 'Every Dog has Its Day' was one of my scripts, a world premiere even haha, and I loved watching it take shape. All of team 6 and their teachers created a fantastic show. I loved every minute.

It was good to be back at fabulous Te Kowhai School, where 2 of my grandsons hang out. Today I was helping students with their speeches. It never ceases to surprise me how inventive they are at coming up with excellent speech topics, and the ideas that follow on. Today I learnt about bees, electric cars, the Titanic, Siamese cats and a lot more. I get oodles of pleasure helping kids to improve their speeches and be the best they can. Thanks everyone :)

What could be better than Pukete School two days in a row, three days! It was time for more dramatic fun, and wow these students came up with brilliant ideas. Some even got to come back for an extra session, and I was so impressed with what they did. They created sneaky pirates, spaceship stealing aliens and milk monsters. Great kids with great acting and lots of laughs. Perfect!

The words of an old song come to mind, 'It's good to be back!' Hello Pukete School, a place where the kids makes me feel as if I belong. Today was time for fun drama sessions for the year 5 students. I love finding all that hidden talent, and getting to be entertained by the fabulous ideas they come up with. I wasn't disappointed. I'll be back tomorrow :)
2020
What a funny old year this has been, and having had no work, it was in June 2020, I finally got to spend time at a school, and it was at the fabulous Pukete for auditions for their 2020 production. I'm going to be there quite a bit over the next few weeks and I'll share more as we go along.

A bit of 'posing fun' during rehearsals for 'Every Dog has Its Day,' at Pukete School. One of the things I enjoy most in my work, is when I get to watch one of my scripts come to life on stage, and seeing how talented young actors take on their roles. There's something completely magical about it all. I am loving my time at Pukete School, working with clever kid and artistic teachers, and watching their production take shape. Seeing what they add only makes it more fun.

Karapiro School thanks for having us visit this morning for ‘Book Day!’ What a lot of fun. Sorry I didn’t read many books, but that’s what happens when you invite a crazy drama teacher, you act the stories out instead! Rosie had a wonderful time meeting all you kids. She was interested in the chook, but not too sure what the ducks even were. I loved, loved, your student’s idea of having a ‘bring a book sale’ to raise money for the SPCA. Awesomeness!

I was very excited to be one of the judges at Hukanui Primary School senior speeches. What an awesome night. The years 5 and 6 are judged, while the year 4’s present their speech for entertainment and to get the feel for next year. The year 3’s do poetry and they were awesome. Two students even chose one of my poems! Love it when that happens. This young man was one of the presenters and was like a stand up comic. The audience loved him. Great work kids and teachers.

Today was my last poetry performance for 2019. I felt a little bit sad, but Tamahere School was a great choice as the year ¾ students were ready, waiting and excited to go. What fun they were. It was a special day as I was 'won' by the fantastic Lila, in a competition to launch the new book, ‘Scary Tales.’ I got to hang out in her class for a while, and also her sister’s senior class, where they were up for whatever I suggested. Thanks :)

Koromatua School is awesome! As my working year winds down, what a great school to hang out for most of the day, meeting fantabulous kids and their teachers, sharing my poetry, and giving them a few writing tips. I met a talented young author who at only 10 years old, completed her first trilogy! How inspiring is that, and I truly hope she gets published. I was blessed to meet two of the children whose work I’ll be publishing in a poetry resource for teachers. Great kids, great day!

Paper Plus at Cromwell was the last visit of this tour. This was an exciting addition, as it was for a reading and signing of Deb and my new book ‘Scary Tales.’ Woo Hoo Paper Plus, what a fun event, and thanks for all your hard work in organizing today’s activity. It was great to walk in and find children waiting, and to reconnect with children I’d met earlier in the day at Goldfields School. I loved your costumes and enthusiasm. Awesome!

If I had to choose a super-duper A+ school to finish this tour on, I'd choose Goldfields Primary School, Cromwell. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by everyone and that our visit was appreciated. An hilarious poetry performance, followed by two brilliant writing/drama workshops, it couldn't have been better. I fell a little bit in love with this school, which is as spectacular as the scenery. Thanks for the positive comments, you warmed my heart! .

Alexandra Primary School - a poetry performance with a difference, as it took place on their ‘outdoor stage.’ The kids were full of energy, ready to show off their awesome acting skills. I had fun with the juniors, and their delightful teacher. Their ideas and enthusiasm were fantastic. Favourite comments – ‘Please come back, and bring Rosie with you,’ and ‘Judi, did you know you’re the funniest person in the whole wide world?'

Today we headed to another town neither we've never been before, Gore, which we now call ‘GOREgeous’ as we both loved it. Gore Main School impressed us with its friendliness and enthusiasm. There were magical moments during the day including hugs and brilliant writing. The writing workshops were great fun. I love how kids inspire me with their talent. School even invited me back, and with such a cool town and ‘Goregous’ kids I might take them up on the offer.

Mataura School was all geared up for a poetry performance, and everyone seemed excited to have their own crazy Drama Queen visiting. What cool kids, and their teachers weren’t bad either! This is my most southern school visited so far, and Les and I were both impressed with the beautiful country landscape in this area. Thanks for letting me hang out in a classroom for a while, and then after lunch it was time to spend with those keen writers.

Hello Clinton School, your welcome was as warm as the sunny weather. You might know how much I enjoy the atmosphere of small country schools, and we weren’t disappointed. Keen students ready to join in was fantastic. I then got to do something else I enjoy, a senior school writing workshop. Seeing everyone involved and coming up with awesome ideas was brilliant. What a clever bunch you are with a teacher as enthusiastic as the kids.

Warepa School is WOW WOW WOW. What a fabulous place to hang out for a day, meeting awesome kids who are blessed with some of the best teachers anywhere. A poetry performance followed by fun packed drama sessions for all the school. It's somewhere I’ve had a connection with for a few years now, and I’ve been really keen to get down and meet everyone, and today it finally happened. What a brilliant experience. Thanks Miss C for the hug!

Karitane I'm told is a piece of Kiwi paradise. After visiting there this today, I can see why, as it’s a stunning part of the country on the Dunedin coastline. But it also has a fabulous school, with that small town family feel that I always enjoy. This was one of those last minute visits, and thanks to the principal for saying, “Come on over and visit our place for a while!” It’s always awesome meeting students that enjoy drama, so I was a happy poet and drama teacher.

I don’t have enough positive adjectives for the fabulous Palmerston Primary School, but I’ll start with WOW WOW WOW, and that was just the principal! It got even better with the most responsive students anywhere, and staff who made us want to move in and stay forever. I got asked fantastic questions, and felt inspired by students. I had a fun session with Mrs G’s class, looking at ways to create, then write stories. It was a blast from start to finish. You rock!

Calling into Flag Swamp School turned out to be a great idea. I only had a short time with the 5 students, but what a delight. Friendly, engaging and engaged, and absolutely charming to meet. They were just back from swimming, so I shared some of my poetry as they munched their morning tea. A big thank you to their lovely principal who was very friendly and accommodating in letting us rock on in. Small on size, but huge on atmosphere, and I felt disappointed that I had to leave so soon. Thanks everyone..

Wow Columba College, what a bunch of superstars you are, students and staff, especially that funny librarian Ms W, who is awesomeness itself! Your sense of excitement and fun was infectious, and I loved the giggles and little stories you shared with me, including about Sally the invisible horse! It was a pleasure meeting two students who’d been prize winners in our recent ‘Scary Tales.’ Some talented young actors added to the fun of the day.
Thanks for a great time, it was a delight!
Thanks for a great time, it was a delight!

I’ve been excited about visiting Grant’s Braes School as my long time friend Mrs M. works there and organized my visit. Sharing this time together was quite special. Then I got to finally meet three of the talented young writers who entered our recent poetry competition for 'Scary Tales.' Lots of students had done a great job, and I enjoyed time with Mia, Maisie and the super talented Levi. This visit was awesome from start to finish.Thank you to the young man who thanked me, and told me I’d inspired him to write. I had a chuckle at the boy who said ‘Bravo, Bravo,’ after I visited his class where we got to write poetry together. What an awesome school all round. Thanks folks!

What fun Deb and I have been having getting out and about with our new book ‘Scary Tales – Rhymes for Brave Children.’ This week we’ve been at the fabulous Books for Kids in Hamilton East, (thanks for having us Megan). Today we got to meet almost 40 children at the awesome St Andrews community library. Thanks to the staff for making it so easy to be there. We had such a lot of fun sharing poems, checking out some of the kids’ dance moves, and making puppets, with the clever Deb lending a hand.

Te Kowhai School was where I spent some time today. They have their speech finals coming up next week, and I was lucky to work with their talented finalists, giving them some tips on presenting their speeches. As an added bonus there’s a young girl in the middle school who not only won an award in my recent poetry competition, but she also won an award for her art. How talented is Miss Ivy! Te Kowhai School is special for another reason, as it's where two of my young grandsons attend school.

‘Cinderfeller Hits Fieldays’ hit Pukete School this week. What an amazing production to be involved in. Mr T was an awesome director, with Mrs A taking control of music and dancing. The script was my ‘baby’ and how exciting it was to see it come to life. I was impressed and proud of how well all the year 6 students worked to create a winning production. I loved writing it, and then watching their interpretations of the characters.

Next week Pukete School are on stage with their production of ‘Cinderfeller Hits Fieldays,’ written by me. So this means I’m spending a lot of time at school this week and next week as the kids bring my script to life. I’m enjoying working with them all. Their brilliant senior team know how to put on a great show. Mr T, director, and Mrs A, music and choreography have done an amazing job. I sure am blessed.

Today was a new experience as Les and I headed out to the awesome, and fantastic Kaipaki School. This was a first, and I certainly hope it won’t be my last visit. I was asked to judge their speeches, and as it was their first time doing them, it made it even more special to be there. The kids did extremely well, and I enjoyed listening to 15 great speeches performed by talented students. Who would’ve thought that Vikings was an interesting speech? The staff were awesome, and I’d go back anytime. Thanks everyone.

Hello Karapiro School, and thanks for asking me to judge your speeches this year. Six seniors were all hyped up and ready to go. A lovely lead in, was listening to the younger students poetry performance and story sharing. I was extremely impressed at the quality of every speech. Facts mixed in with anecdotes, made for some of the highest quality speeches I’ve ever heard at a primary school. Who would’ve thought socks could be a successful speech topic. We were informed and entertained which is what speech making is all about.

Speech time at Hautapu School, and I was ready to see what treats were in store. Some nervous young speechmakers were waiting to present their work. Students from years 5 to 8, were competing to win a place in the regional round. Some interesting topics that entertained us. I’ve been judging at Hautapu for a few years now, and it was rewarding to see the development in all the students' skills.

Maihiihi School is always a great place to spend a day, as it’s bursting full of fabulous kids, hilarious staff, friendliness, laughter and happiness. It's one of those great country schools that welcomes you with open arms. I thoroughly enjoyed working in each class, as we focused on stagecraft, in preparation for their upcoming school production. Look at these young actors getting into character already! They were also the first school to see my new book due out soon. :)

Today was a little bit different as I headed to Hamilton’s shopping mall, ‘The Base’ at Te Rapa. The events staff have a brilliant project on the go, where they invite authors to spend time reading to children. The kids were spread out, all colouring in, but I managed to get to know everyone and share my poetry. I met children from a lot of different schools, including some I'll be visiting in September for Duffy Books. It was special to meet those I've met before. The gorgeous Miss J was a delight to meet, and I loved this picture of us. :)

I wonder if the Fairy Godmother in Pukete School’s production is going to look like this. What fun I’ve had this week helping out at auditions, seeing students get up and give it a go, trying out for different roles in the play. There are some fun characters too, like a crazy Granny Rat! No surprises there. Can't wait for the show!

I spend so much time at Pukete School I should move into the staffroom! What a surprise that would be for everyone. I’ve been working with the children on their speeches, and today was when I got to judge the top three year 4/5/6 students. Some great topics, from Dad being their Superhero, to inventors, sport, advertising and endangered animals. I love it when I leave a school after speeches, having learnt something new. Well done to everyone who wrote a speech. :)

It was fun to be back at Te Rapa School, as it’s a few years since I last visited. I got to hang out in a year 2 class, bursting with enthusiastic, friendly and positive students, all ready and eager to join in whatever I suggested. We played some drama games, and the children were amazing. We had a go at starting a ‘space’ story about meeting an alien, and wow what awesome ideas they had. :)

Today it was back to Pukete Primary School, where I was lucky enough to get to work with their year 4/5/6 speech finalists. Wow, what great talent I got to listen to. It always amazes me what great topics students come up with to speak about. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their introductions and conclusions, and giving them some tips to make their performances that little bit better. Find a photo of all finalists on the photo page.

Hello Ms H’s class at St Pius School in Hamilton. I was lucky to have the chance to spend time with these fabulous kids today. Years 6/7/8 is a level I don’t spend a lot of time with, and it’s always great when it happens. It involved general writing tips, joint poetry creating, story starters, and even a drama game. The kids were enthusiastic and full of bright ideas. I'm looking forward to getting back there in September. bring it on! :)

Woo Hoo Rototuna Primary School, where we were in store for even more fun with these fabulous kids, who had all taken their best sense of humour with them to school today. We had lots of laughs. I got the warm fuzzies, when so many students asked me when I was going back, and did I have to leave. Not to mention the fantastic hugs they gave me. Then it was time in Mrs H's class, and we got to write about a 'boggle.' Great fun!

Te Totara School was great fun from start to finish. I was delighted to be back there, and get to meet more awesome kids, and share my poetry with them. I loved their laughter and enthusiasm for whatever I got up to. As a bonus, I then got to spend time in a classroom, which is always such a special time. I discovered some great young stars all ready to show others their acting talent. Thanks for having me back, and look forward to the next time!

It was time to head to one of my favourite schools, Pukete Primary. Today was about helping everyone get ready to present their speeches to their class. Speaking in front of others isn’t an easy thing to do for a lot of people, but we had fun while I shared some tips to make it that little bit easier. A drama game was one of the activities, and you can tell by the photo it created a lot of laughs. Looking forward to going back again tomorrow! :)

Hukanui School let me come back please. What a great morning I had yesterday in Mrs M’s electives class. I shared some of my poems, and the children enjoyed the opportunity to get up front, and show me some of their amazing acting talents. We played a few fun drama games. The class were very enthusiastic and full of ideas, and ready for action. After the break we had a little bit of time for writing tips, where the children learnt that all you need is one idea and you build on it. They had some cool ideas too. Thanks for having me, it was fantabulous! :)

Pukete School is somewhere I always enjoy spending time. They have speeches coming up this term, and asked me to work with their year 4/5/6 students, so I’ve been running workshops on speech writing. I love helping kids to be the best they can be, and we had a lot of laughs along the way. Kids were enthusiastic and keen to get some tips, and also inspiration for a topic. Thanks Mr T for organizing my visits. I was having so much fun I forgot to take a photo, so this is from speech finals a few years ago.

Our last school visit on this trip south, was to Henley School in Richmond, with the year 3/4 team, and a few year 5/6's along for a bit of fun. What a great bunch of students. One made my day when he showed excitement at seeing my book, ‘Granny Goes To Hip Hop.’ He told me he loves it, which was fabulous to hear. Lots of children told me how much they’d enjoyed ‘my show.’ I was lucky enough to work with 20 children for a drama based oral language workshop. It was fun!

The blessings continued, as we headed into the country to Lower Moutere School. I’d need a whole page to tell you all the fabulous things about our visit. The incredible sense of fun was obvious from the moment we arrived, and the students delightful response reminded me of why I keep doing this job. Seeing them enjoy my poetry was heart warming. The staff were hilarious, and this visit was so much fun I asked if we could move in! You rock!

What a treat at Hope School in Richmond. These kids know how to laugh and have fun, along with their awesome teachers. I had a great time, and they encouraged me to be even sillier than normal. The juniors kept an eye on Les in case he was naughty! I had some of the best actors I’ve ever seen help me out. I was lucky enough to spend time in Mrs W’s class. Well done to the young man who thanked me for visiting Hope School. A great place :)

St Joseph’s School, Nelson, was the last stop of the day, where I got to spend time with the year 7/8 students, and one middle school class. We had to make a few changes to the plan, but wow what a great group of students that I was honoured to meet, and work with, along with their two fantabulous teachers. I had a blast, and loved their openness to whatever I came up with, and how they got fully involved in the fun of poetry. Thanks guys, you rock!

Auckland Point School was always going to be fun, as someone very special works at this cool school. Her name is Whaea M, and I was her drama teacher for 7 to 8 years, how awesome is that! The children were lively, and all arrived with their senses of humour ready for whatever happened, and joined in with fun. I got to spend a little time with Whaea M’s class, and we got busy creating a new animal…… a ‘crog.’ It lives underwater, has green pointy ears, and is angry and frustrated!

On another sunny day, we set off to Clifton Terrace School, which has one of the best views of any school in New Zealand. We got to meet a hall full of enthusiastic, friendly, fun kids that delighted us with their engaging personalities, as well as one small bird that flitted around from window to window! I had a fun session in Mrs H’s class later on, and we wrote a fun ‘jackiwa’ poem about a cranky, stinky, granny who was ready to blow, and blow she did. The kids were overflowing with ideas, and it was an awesome time! We even had a face pulling session. Thanks everyone.

THANK YOU to St Canice’s in Westport for an amazing visit. What a brilliant school, full of awesome students, and equally awesome staff, including my friend Mrs R. Even the Principal cracked funny jokes. It sure was my kind of school. During question time, one young man asked if I could come back the next day, what a compliment. Lots of children asked if I’d go back, which always makes me feel very special. I loved the time in Mrs R’s class. My favourite thing was reading a poem that the class had written. I didn’t want to leave...... not ever!

The Pop Up Poet decided to pop in to Kumara School. It was 2 p.m., and I said to Les, ‘Look, there’s a school up there, shall we surprise them?’ The teacher was lovely, and welcomed us with open arms for an impromptu poetry reading, with a bit of acting thrown in. When the principal arrived back, her school had been taken over by us causing mayhem. She wasn’t bothered, how cool is that! The students at Kumara, have more animals than anyone I know!

On a cold and miserable morning in Christchurch, we arrived to a warm welcome at Riccarton Primary School, as a young student held the gate open for us, telling us we were welcome. We had a change of plans, but managed to squeeze years 1 – 4 into a classroom where the fun and games took place. Everyone was so friendly which makes a visit a success. One of the boys recited a poem about robots for us, that he wrote. Thanks for having us :)

- What a load of fun we had at the super West Spreydon School. From the moment we walked in great things happened. Thanks Miss D for the big hug! The office staff were hilarious, and we weren’t even in the hall. The positive approach of the students and staff made the visit even better. Thanks Josh for telling me I’m the funniest person you’ve ever met. It's always special when children tell my visit made them want to write. I didn’t want to leave.......ever! :)

Knights Stream Primary School is a wonderful, brand new school in Halswell, Christchurch. Small on numbers, but large on personalities, and an atmosphere of fun. There were some exciting actors within, waiting to get their ’drama queen’ or king on display for others to enjoy. The children were incredibly friendly, and had some excellent questions to ask me. I also got to meet one of the best little huggers in the whole wide world. Thanks for a good time.

Triple Wow to Christchurch's Waltham School, and the fantastic kids and teachers who hang out there. You guys rock, just like poetry. Thanks for your patience as I hobbled around with my broken toes. I loved your sense of fun, and willingness to join in. Thanks for letting me present the poetry writing prizes too, that was special, as was spending time in several classrooms after. I am inspired by the incredible storytelling that is happening in Waltham School.

Thanks Mrs J for letting me come and hang out in your classroom of super duper stars at Aberdeen Primary School. This school is always special for me, as my two oldest granddaughters went to Aberdeen, and it is just around the corner from where I live. I have an exciting new project on the go, with the talented Kiwi illustrator, Deborah Hinde. Mrs J. was kind enough to let me come in and trial the new poetry. I got to meet a young man who had also snapped a bone in his foot, just like me. How amazing was that!

ACG at Pyes Pa in Tauranga was a great place for my first poetry performance of 2019. A small school with a huge heart and sense of fun. The kids and staff were brilliant, which always makes for a good time. The kids were understanding as I hobbled in with a broken foot and a walking stick, which came in handy as a prop. Thanks to the children who came to thank me afterwards, and the young miss who stated quite clearly, “You are funny!” Look at those expressive faces!
2019
Let's get this poetry party started.
THANK YOU to everyone at all the fabulous schools we've visited this year. There have been many good times that Les I remember with smiles. Duffy Books assemblies have continued to be an absolute delight. This year we covered from Whananaki up north, to Dunedin down south. As well as private visits sharing my poetry, and running workshops for awesome kids. THANKS to everyone who has contributed to making it such a successful year full of warm fuzzies.

FAREWELL 2018, what a fun and incredible year it's been. Today was my last booking for the year, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I spend most of my working life in schools with loads of gorgeous kids, but today it was very different, as Les and I got to hang out with Waikato's resource teachers of literacy for their end of year get together. I shared some of my journey, and poetry with them, including new work I've been writing. It was a fabulous day! Thanks :)

Now we were all off to my last (booked) school visit for 2018, at Royal Road Primary School in West Auckland. An enthusiastic bunch were waiting for my poetry performance. Thanks to those who told me they thought it was fun. I got to share it all with my granddaughter Kyla, who came along to help me run a drama workshop with 23 selected students. WOW, they were all brilliant, and Kyla and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all their incredible acting 'superstar' talents.

This morning was one of the most fun visits ever, as there was some trickery involved. I have ‘skyped’ with a class at Sunnyhills Primary School, and this morning as they tried to talk to me again, there was a surprise. I was actually standing outside their classroom door, and with help from Les, hey presto, I bounced in….for real. The response from the kids was awesome as we got to meet one another. Thanks Mrs M for helping sort such a sneaky plan! Fantabulous!

St Joseph’s, Te Kuiti, the place to be if you want to hang out with fantastic kids and teachers. I am a little biased, as three of my gorgeous grandchildren go to St Jo’s. I spent a little time in my youngest granddaughter’s class, which was extra special as it was her 7th birthday. (She's on the special chair.) I then ran two fabulously fun writing workshops for years 5 to 8, which involved quite a lot of laughing. But you don’t get this crazy granny visit your school without laughing involved. It’s compulsory. 😊

Next was Ngongotaha Primary, where the middle school was ready and waiting. It was good to be back, after having last visited as their Duffy role model. The kids were great. I even got to meet another crazy granny! There were some stand out actors. Highlights were reading their fabulous cat poems, and meeting a lovely young girl who'd been wanting to meet me for ages. I 'm always blessed to meet people who love my poetry. Thanks Whaea C for asking me, and everyone.

We arrived at Otonga School in Rotorua, with no idea what was in store. All the students and staff were brilliant from start to finish. I love it when kids are ready to enjoy themselves, whatever happens. I spent time in my friend Mrs B’s class which was awesome. Some favourite moments were the young man telling me I should be a laughing teacher! Another was reading all the ‘jackiwa’ poems the children had been writing. Thanks Otonga, I’ll come back anytime.

If I thought the kids at ACG Strathallan were a great audience for my poetry performance, when I spent time with year 6 students for writing workshops, I was in for another wonderful surprise. Wow, they were awesome, sharing their writing highs and their frustrations. They had some very impressive ideas, and were upsizing their words at every chance. Here is a 'jackiwa' poem we wrote about a crazy granny. I'll come back anytime!

ACG Strathallan School was an absolute delight to visit for one of my last poetry performances of 2018. What an amazing audience these children were, ready to laugh and chuckle at every poem I performed. They were so involved and eager to get up and join in. Thank you to the young girl who told me, "Judi, you're awesome and should be a comedian" 😊 The staff were brilliantly friendly. The kids must have taught them. I even met someone I know. What a surprise!

Taradale Primary where hilariously funny kids hang out. What a fun visit from start to finish, with so many laughs, and new friends made. The kids were all ready for whatever came their way, and joined in with such enthusiasm they gave me warm fuzzies. Thanks for having me, and also for letting us hang out in Room 11 for way too long. Miss S, you rock, as do all your kids! Wait till I tell Rosie what she missed out on, she’ll be so disappointed, hahaha, I'll show her the photos instead!

It was time for a trip to the sunny Hawkes Bay, as it's 35 years since I'd been in this part of the country. It was good to get reacquainted! Tuesday saw me visiting Peterhead School at Flaxmere, Hastings, where I started off with a visit to a year 6/7/8 class, before heading to the hall for a poetry performance for that whole team. Was interesting for me to work with just this age group, but the kids didn’t disappoint, as they were a great audience and fun to work with. Thanks :)

What an exciting time as I watched the cast and crew at Pukete School here in Hamilton, pull together a professional and outstanding production. I was delighted they chose 'Fiasco In The Forest,' and have done my script proud, as well as themselves. Live theatre is awesome! They had the audience totally involved. Huge congratulations to Mr T for his amazing work as director, and Mrs A for her musical direction, and letting me hang out giving advice, and being part of such a successful! The best feeling ever.

Rosie goes to school at Bishop Edward Gaines in Tokoroa. It was quite a day for visitors, as Les as I met the talented, young Kiwi singer Maaka Fiso, who was there presenting school’s Duffy books. Les and I sponsor this school, and decided to visit and be part of the day’s happenings. I ended up sharing a few poems, and doing two impromptu writing workshops. Great fun, as the kids came up with their own fun ‘jackiwa’ poems. Les loved the scones the principal made!

Rehearsal time this week at Pukete School. I've really enjoyed helping out with a few tips. My play, ‘Fiasco In The Forest,’ is their 218 production, and it’s been awesome seeing my characters come to life. What a great experience as the kids see the acting, sound, lighting, costumes, music, dance and makeup come together. Well done Mr T!

The blessings just kept on rolling in, and Whananaki School was the last school on this tour of Northland. What a setting for a school, with stunning views! It was great to meet everyone, after having been in contact with one of their awesome teachers. So many good things here. One of the best principals I’ve ever met, guiding over a professional yet laid back environment. Ms M’s class were pleased to have me spend time, and we sang the ‘Plastic Minefield’ song together. Thanks!

- Hukerenui School was always going to be a bit of a hit and run visit, but it was fabulous. I'm really pleased we made the effort to call in. The kids were ready and waiting, and their behaviour was simply outstanding. Credit to the staff for being equally awesome. The enthusiastic audience response was hilarious. I had to keep pausing as they laughed so much at times. They were a sheer delight, including the tiger in the front row!

Glenbervie School was a bright spot on a chilly morning. Three classrooms were gathered, and ready for fun with poetry. What a great bunch of kids, with three fun teachers as well. A highlight was meeting a delightful young girl who was pleased to meet me, as she’d performed, and won with, one of my poems at the recent Whangarei drama competitions. Those moments are special. What a great school to spend time, and I felt sad to leave.

Speeches, speeches and more speeches. Yes it’s that season that I love and some dread. Give it a go and surprise yourself. Being able to stand up and speak in front of others is a great life skill. So who is hiding behind the certificate….why yes, it’s Hautapu School’s winner, who did an hilarious speech, ‘Teenager In Training.’ All the kids did a fabulous job. I always love geting out to Hautapu and judging their speeches. Thanks for having me.

No, this isn’t the principal at Pukete School, but it is a character in their school production, ‘Fiasco In The Forest, written by………. drum roll please……. Me! It’s really exciting seeing the characters come to life under the guidance of Mr T. I pop in and annoy them with a few tips, and ‘come on you lot get sorted’ comments. :) Can’t wait to see it all come together for their opening night in a few weeks.

Whenuakite School, come on in. Thanks Jen for organising such a fun visit to celebrate NATIONAL POETRY DAY. Tairua library was a perfect venue for a poetry performance and to hang out with these stupendous kids for a while. They had some well thought out questions, and all brought their senses of humour with them. Look at Les centre stage! Like me, he loves meeting everyone. :)

Yay, I finally got to spend time at the picturesque Tairua School. What a setting, surrounded by stunning harbour views, and the kids and teachers don’t look too bad either! This was a special visit, as Tairua is where I love to spend time and write. I also reconnected with one of the teachers whom I’ve known she was a little girl. Hugs all round. Thanks for having me, and the gorgeous girl I saw down town who gave me a thumbs up and said ‘Love your work!’

When I walk into a school hall and see such fabulous ‘book based’ displays on the wall, I know I’m in the right environment for me. Pukete School has such a positive feel about it, and always feels a bit like coming home. This visit was another great day full of drama based stagecraft workshops, as year 6 students are getting ready for their upcoming production. The kids did really well, with everyone joining in along the day.

What a full on, but fun day was held at Pukete School here in Hamilton. It’s nice to work close to home sometimes, when I don’t have to leave Rosie, and I don't have to pack a bag. It was a day of drama, but good drama as Pukete gets ready for its upcoming school production. 'Fiasco In The Forest' is a script that I wrote which makes it really exciting for me. That means this week is all about stagecraft.

The Lions International Young Speech Maker of the year, is a fantastic contest. I was priviledged to adjudicate at national level, and hear these talented young speakers compete for a fabulous overseas trip, or attendance at an international youth camp. Hearing their aspirations is a gift, and shows our country is in great hands.
Well done Rangiora Lions for hosting.
Well done Rangiora Lions for hosting.

I must be doing something right haha, as Ouruhia School, in Christchurch, asked me back again, and were even pleased to see me! Great kids, awesome teachers and staff, brilliant sunshine and fun with poetry and writing workshops. It doesn’t come any better than this in my world. It gave me a real buzz to hear that every Friday at assembly, they share one of my poems. How cool is that. I felt like a superstar!

It was really great to be working close to home today, at Vardon Primary School. I say working, but my job more often feels like fun, when I'm doing a poetry performance. I never get tired of meeting new children, and today was extra special as two of my young drama students go to this school. There were some real characters here, and I always enjoy meeting others with a fun sense of humour. Thanks for having me Vardon.

Pukete School senior speech finals today, and I was lucky enough to be a judge. I’m sure everyone was impressed, with not only the wide range of topics, but also the fabulous way finalists presented their speeches. They made us laugh, but also informed us. The high standard of both speeches, and the outstanding behaviour of everyone, says a lot about a school. Well done to every student who has presented a speech. What a great life skill!

Wow is what I thought when I arrived at the fabulous Pukete School this morning to work with their talented speech finalists. I've been lucky enough to do this before, and I get so much pleasure helping all these great students learn some new performance skills. I'm always impressed with the range of topics they come up with. I had a special moment when a few children said..'You're Judi Billcliff aren't you?" I felt like a celebrity for a while! This photo was taken after the year 6 finals. Wow they were brilliant and bubbling with talent.

Oranga Primary was a cool school to visit for many different reasons. I grew up in the next street, and my brother was a foundation pupil in the olden days. I took a special guest with me (also a foundation pupil) who was once captain of the Kiwis, the NZ league team. Another good reason for visiting is it's a cool school full of cool kids. Thanks so much for telling me you enjoyed my poetry and loved my drama based workshop. It was a lot of fun!

What fun I had on Saturday night, as I got to watch my five senior drama students entertain a large crowd of delighted diners, at a Lion’s 40th Anniversary dinner. It began as a flash mob, when a surprise disagreement startled the audience haha. But ended with a lot of the audience on their feet, clapping and singing along to songs from the last four decades. I was proud of ‘my girls,’ as they were brilliant, and watching their talent was an honour. One missing from photo.

Hello to Insoll Avenue Primary School, it was good to return, as this was the very first school I visited as a Duffy Book Role Model. There’s always something special about returning and reconnecting. Thanks to Whaea L for letting me hang out in Room 16 for a while. What great kids you get to teach. It was so much fun sharing rhymes from 'Have You Ever Seen A Sheep Dance' with them, and making up fun and exciting new animals. Thanks everyone, I had a fun time. :)

Hello Horotiu School. Thanks for such a friendly welcome. It was great to be back and spend time with years 3 – 6. The team had been studying my poetry, so when I performed my first poem, they all called out the final line. What fun! Fantastic staff who I’d be happy to hang out with again. Horotiu seniors run their own radio station, and I was interviewed and broadcast live. They now know I prefer marmite to vegemite. Thanks everyone.

Every time I think time to slow down, I visit a school like Mount Biggs and say to myself……nooo keep going, as it was such a fabulously, fun visit, and look what I would’ve missed out on. The staff were as hilarious as the kids. Rosie had a blast as country kids smell so good to her nose, especially the girl who had doggie treats in her pocket. So many positives from this visit including discovering what a beautiful voice teacher Renee has. Talent is everywhere at this little country school.

Longburn School is where some of New Zealand’s most hilarious and enthusiastic kids hide. We were greeted with lots of smiles that warmed us on a freezing cold day. The laughter of these stunning children was absolutely infectious. I really enjoyed helping young writers learn more about what makes a good story. One young man told me he’d learnt that writing doesn’t stink. Result! I got to read poems to the juniors and Rosie listened too. What a great day in a super special school.

At Feilding Intermediate, I was lucky enough to meet this talented young writer who’d been a finalist in a recent poetry competition, along with his pretty cool classmates, including one who said "Judi you should be a comedienne!" Their incredible teacher Mr T, whose support for ‘his kids’ shines out like a beacon. I loved working with year 7/8 passionate writers, helping them hone their craft. There was a sense of fun that made this a great school to hang out at for a while.

Manchester Street School needs a warning on the gate that states - ‘Amazing kids within all ready to have fun and work hard.’ Rosie was a star attraction at the
poetry performance. It was rewarding when some students told me they’d learnt a lot at the writing workshops. Some girls told me they wanted to kidnap Rosie and me, and lock us in a cupboard (in a good way)so they could keep us forever. Supportive teachers are always a bonus, and combined with delightful kids, this visit was a treat. Thanks Mrs T and Mrs M.

Toku Maiphihi Maurea Kura was a special visit for me. The kids were amazing, full of life, enthusiasm and fun as we worked on poetry speaking techniques in the English classes. But the best thing for me was working alongside Whaea Donna who I first worked with back in 1997 in Te Kuiti, when she was a new teacher. She was good then, she's outstanding now. I had a great time.

Wow, wow, wow and one more wow for everyone at Matamata Intermediate. This is a school I love visiting. Rooms 8 and 13 you were fabulous, as was the writers group who came up with great ads. :) A special HELLO to Mrs D's Room 12. They're one of my favourite classrooms ever. Writing processes, slam poetry, drama and performance tips were all part of the day. Thanks Mrs S for asking me back. Anytime! Check out Noah C's poem here.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Bernard Fergusson, Ngaruawahia was a great place to kick off term 2. I'm not well as I have bronchitis, and the kids were great. Today’s session was all about writing/performing our own slam poetry. Well done guys. The kids chose language as their topic, and came up with some brilliant ideas. Back I went today to work with the fabulous year 6 students, and what a fabulous group of kids. I thoroughly enjoyed their company and sharing their imaginative ideas as they had fun with drama.

Sawyers Bay School…..Ready……Set… Action. It was action aplenty from start to finish, with hilarity, incredible audience participation, including Les who had to be Grandma. (Check the photos.) What an awesome school that was a sheer pleasure and delight to visit. How lucky that Issy goes to this school, and I managed to sneak in. Everyone was great fun. I loved sharing my poetry with everyone. One girl laughed so much she cried… Brilliant!

Sacred Heart Primary was a stop I had to make during my Duffy Book tour to the South Island, as this is where talented writers hang out during the day, some of whom were part of the classroom winning entry now published in my latest book. Mrs P in Room 7 was so bright and bubbly and helped make the visit very special. You guys are brilliant, and I enjoyed sharing your success. Well done on being published authors. :)

Les and I left Auckland yesterday in sunshine and 25 degrees, to land in Christchurch to 9 degrees. Brrrr it was chilly, but the smiles and enthusiasm of the children at Discovery School in Halswell, more than made up for the cold outside. This was a special visit, as I got to meet Pippa, a gracious and extremely talented young writer, whose poem is in my latest book, 'Granny Does Karate,' making her a published author. I was thrilled to meet her.

Thanks Bankwood Primary for letting me visit and make you all laugh, and realise that not only is Bankwood School cool, but so is poetry. It was great to meet you all, and your oustanding teachers who helped make it a great morning. It was good to share a few new poems from 'Granny Does Karate,' and hear how much you liked them. After my performance some children asked me some fantastic questions, which shows 'thinking' children attend Bankwood School. Thanks everyone for a special visit.

It was time for me to get back to school this week. Kihikihi Primary was the perfect place to start, as I used to live down the road. It was my first venture as the 'Pop up Poet,' as Les and I travel around in our new caravan with Rosie. Whaea Sharon took up my offer for a classroom visit, and boy did her class work together to write a great 'jackiwa' poem. You can see in this photo how happy Rosie was to be back at school, and the kids were great with her. Thanks! :)
2018 IS HERE AND I AM READY TO GO!
2017 SCHOOL VISITS HAVE COME TO AN END.
What a blast I've had meeting so many great kids and teachers. Les and I have travelled all around the country visiting schools, and I wouldn't want to be doing any other job. Have a great Christmas and holiday break where ever you are.

Thanks Mrs L for having me as one of the judges at Hukanui School speech finals. What a fabulous night with so many brilliant speakers. I was impressed how you combined personal experiences with facts to create interesting speeches. As a bonus I got to hear year 3/4 speeches/poems, and guess what.... I heard my own poetry being performed. What an honour and a thrill! This photo was from an early year 3/4 vsit.

Well a huge THANK YOU to the wonderful Whatawhata School for letting me come and spend time in the year 2/3 hub. Thanks Miss S for organising it. I couldn't have chosen a better school to spend my last classroom visit for 2017! You guys were fantastic. Well behaved, interested and enthusiastic. I don't think I've ever had so many amazing, excellent questions from a year 2/3 class. I was really impressed with the ideas you thought to ask me about. I also enjoyed writing a 'jackiwa' poem with you all. You were brilliant, and I'll come back anytime.

Yesterday I was back at fabulous Hautapu School. I was lucky enough to work with these two talented young speechmakers pictured with me at their school finals. It was great listening to their speeches again, and being able to help the girls by giving them some performance tips they can use in the regional finals this Friday. Both speakers show real potential. Wishing them lots of luck. Go Hautapu! I also met someone else special. Check out my blog.

Tatuanui School was the perfect choice for the last poetry performance for 2017. Les, Rosie and I had a special time meeting you all. We were impressed with your behaviour. Your energy, laughter, sense of humour and enthusiasm to join in was brilliant. Thanks Miss M's class for letting me come in and have some fun with you. You guys joined in amazingly well. Kereru, what can I say to describe you and your teacher. how about...
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Thanks.
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Thanks.

Thanks for having me St Joseph's, Te Aroha. My 10th St Jo's school around the country.
Rosie had a great time, and was very happy you were all gentle with her. I especially loved my time in the juniors after the poetry performance. We had a lot of fun reading poems, creating animals, and learning the digraph dance. You guys were brilliant at joining in. It's been cool tonight, as I've had emails from some of you about my poems.

Not too far down the road from Waingaro School is the equally picturesque Te Akau School. Rosie was pretty excited to escape the car and meet new children to cuddle. She did disappear during my performance, Les found her sniffing for rabbits in the bush. Maybe the kids could write a poem about that. Thanks for being so kind to Rosie. We had a lot of fun, and it was great you were all keen to join in. It was cool writing a poem together too. Thanks for having me :)

The end of the year is looming for me, but the fabulous schools just keep on appearing. Today was extra special as Rosie came along to the wonderful Waingaro school. It was a brilliant visit, laid back, great kids, a well behaved dog and the teachers were pretty well behaved too. Your enthusiasm was appreciated. I met some of the nicest kids anywhere. Thanks seniors for letting me come and annoy you afterwards. I loved it!

I was lucky enough to run two more workshops for students at Matamata Int. I enjoyed the word game we played as much as the kids. It was cool to have some children I know in the second group. I was honoured to meet some amazing young authors, including some that have been published. Nice to meet people that get you! Great teachers produce great students. :)

I ran three workshops at Matamata Int today, but Room 12 was so outstanding I wanted to give them a special mention of their own. These students stole a bit of my heart, and is one of the best classes I've ever visited. Resepectful, polite, keen to listen to my poetry and just great kids from start to finish, happy to join in, and they appreciated everything. I loved the garden you've done with all those fabulous sayings. You're right, 'Life isn't a dress rehearsal'. Enjoy your life!

Yes folks, here is yet another St Joseph's Primary School, this time in Matamata.I keep telling you I'm the St Jo's expert. I was greeted by the smiling and friendly principal, who took me to meet her super duper students. Small schools are often a treat, due to the family feel. I enjoyed sharing my work, and answering questions with the seniors. It was lovely to have some children come up to thank me for visiting their school. Thanks!

Mrs PE at Firth School asked for a visit when I was in Matamata this week. Well guess what, I did as I was asked and found some time to pop into the new entrant's class where she was teaching yesterday. The kids were busy reading their books, and I helped for a little while. Excitement followed as I showed them my books. and they got involved in all the bright pictures and fun stories within. It was nice to be back at Firth School again.

Matamata Primary, what can I say? Fantastic, fun, awesome, lively, entusiastic..... is that enough for you to get the idea? The kids were into the fun of poetry which made for a great visit. Spending time in Mrs P's class was amazing, as you were all so excited to share your enjoyment of my new chapter book. I even got told I was a 5 star performer, along with lots and lots of hugs. Brilliant! Thanks.

Hinuera School was a great place to begin this trip. What a friendly and fun atmosphere from the moment I arrived. I even got a hug or two from the principal. That doesn't happen everywhere! Thanks to Mrs B for organising this fabulous visit. I got given a few ideas for some new poems about Granny, so watch this space for Granny gets a motorbike. Thanks for all those smiles, you kids were super stars!

Thanks Te Kowhai Primary for a fabulous visit It was great, as two of my awesome grandsons attend this school. Two poetry performances, followed by morning tea, then two classroom visits. Highlights were sharing time with my grandsons, two fabulous students who were having their first day at TKP after meeting me at Waerenga School, the shockaroo picture, and the best whiteboard markers ever. Thanks!

Sunset Primary School is another placel I always enjoy visiting. Whaea Prue's class is somewhere I enjoy sneaking into when I get a few spare minutes. It's great the kids ask if I can visit, so how can I say no. Yesterday I offered to pop in at lunchtime if anyone wanted to talk about writing. I was so impressed that some of the girls turned up to come and talk to me and ask questions. Thanks for the hugs girls. You rock! Good luck for next year.

Selwyn Primary School and Mrs Bowen's class is always a special place to visit in Rotorua. The kids are always excited to hear about my books and listen to my poems. Some of these fabulous kids had read my draft copy of 'Help! Granny Wants To Be A Streaker.' It was great seeing their excitement about my story. A real highlight was meeting Teone who will be having his poem published in my next book.

Mind Plus is a fabulous classroom, where some children get to spend one day a week, so they can be extended in specialist subjects. This is my 3rd year working with some talented young writers, and their outstanding teacher Sue B. I get to visit three days in a row with different age levels. I love sharing some poems with them, then have them share their writing with me. I enjoy divulging a few tips, and hanging out with people who enjoy what I do, writing!

Mokoia Intermediate was a great place to spend much of the day with these fabulous teachers. I was impressed with their expectations of behaviour. Three writing workshops with a drama element, resulted in a lot of laughter and creativity. An alien, a potato and a unicorn became the main characters in some pretty out there stories. Not to mention Nothsa the God of spaghetti, and Ebbor the protector of the pigs. Even met a few published authors! A great day!

It happened again today, I fell in love with another school. Bombay Primary School was brilliant from start to finish. My day began with a poetry performance for the whole school. Then the rest of the day was writing workshops for talented young writers. Students were so open to listening. learning, and improving their writing. It was rewarding to be thanked by some students and told I'd inspired them. Thanks!

This was one of those times when I feel sad to leave one school, but am delighted when I arrive at the next one. Te Kauwhata Primary was the perfect place to spend some time. Everyone was so friendly, and the kids were surprised to see a little while fluffy dog turn up for the poetry show. What a great bunch of smiling faces, ready to enjoy whatever came their way. We met some really special people here. Thanks TKP!

Waerenga School where I fell a little bit in love. I was having such a stupendous time I didn't want to leave. This was Rosie's first school poetry performance, and she was amazing. Thanks for being so kind and welcoming. Everyone was friendly from the moment we stepped in the front door making it a school I'd love to visit again. The sense of fun and attitude was incredible. Thanks for a great classroom visit where we got to write poetry together. Wow, wow, wow.

Whoop Whoop Horsham Downs School. It was a blast from start to finish. It's so great when kids are engaged, lively and enjoying whatever comes along next. Les came on this visit, so he got to meet more awesome teachers and kids, not to mention Lulu the dog. Rosie could've had a playdate! Thanks for the classroom time with year 7/8 students, and the young man for the applause when I finished. ... Thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and look forward to a return visit!

What a great place to head to on a Tuesday morning. Yes, Room 13 at Fairfield Primary and the fantastic Miss W's brilliant juniors, who are some of the best new entrants I've ever met. Focused, good listening skills and ready to get into whatever came their way. We shared rhymes from my books, did some acting, played a game and even made a start on an idea for them to write about once I had left. It was a special time from start to finish. Poor Les he missed a treat!

The last time I was at Tainui Full Primary was a few years ago as their Duffy Books role model. I have great memories of my time there, and was pretty excited to be invited back again. I worked right throughout the school, talking about writing, playing a few drama activities, and giving the students tips to help them. Every teacher I worked with was fantastic, and there were so many special moments along the day. I enjoyed reconnecting with so many students and staff.

Tokoroa North School was the perfect way to kick off Term 4. I thought the kids were great, but the teachers were also brilliant. I even discovered that their fantastic Principal used to live in the same small town I did. The day started with a fun poetry performance, then I was off to spend time in each Yr 3/4/classroom. Today was all about getting the kids delving deep into their minds, and what brilliant ideas they had sitting there waiting to be released. I had an absolutely awesome day.

It was time to get back out to one of my favourite schools ever...... yes folks........ Cambridge Primary School. Today was time to be working on those speeches, I told you it was 'speech season.' I worked with Rutherford team, and it was cool to see by the time I left, everyone had an idea for a topic, as that can sometimes be the hardest part of speechmaking. After the workshop I had a little wander through some of the year 3/4 classrooms as they're always excited to see Judi Billcliff. I feel like a celebrity at times, and it makes me feel special. The young man in this photo told me he thinks he's my biggest fan, and is overtaking his classmate who held that role. Haha great stuff!

This is a photo of me with my gorgeous and talented oldest daughter. I got to have another new experience this week, when I judged the Waikato Full Primary regional speech finals held at Otorohanga South School. It was the first time we've judged together, and it was really special to share that time with my daughter. The year 7 girls were all fabulous, and choosing three was a tough task. I think it was the closest speech final I've been involved in. Hard to leave anyone out.

What a fun change today made, as I was invited to be guest speaker at a women's group here in Hamilton, and talk about SNAIL Mail Day and how it all began. This rolled over into my books, poetry performances, and of course my fantastic work with Duffy Books In Homes, visiting schools as one of their role models. I got to meet a lady who went to the Queen concert. Rock on! It was a fun morning and would love to do more of this work.

Today was a bit different, as Les and I headed down to St Joseph's Te Kuiti for their poetry and speech finals. I was really lucky that my three grandies who go to the fabulous St Jo's were all in the finals. The thrill for me was how many students had chosen my poems to perform, and had made it to the finals. Some I'd not heard before performed by kids, and I loved it. I also got to share some of my poetry with the audience, and that was a fun experience.

It's that time of year, and today it was Pukete Primary School's turn for their speech finals. Nine talented young speakers had their chance to wow their audience, and wow they did. My fantastic fellow judge and I were both impressed with the topics chosen, and also how well constructed the students' speeches were. The same topics often come up over and over again, and it was great to see such originality. The way all children supported each other says a lot about the school and it's staff. Thanks Mrs A for inviting me. :)

Maihiihi School is in a magical setting, under the guidance of the magnificent Mr Mac, one of the funniest people (in a good way) I've ever met. I got to work with their speech finalists which was rewarding, as they listened and took my advice on board. Then it was fun and games with the years 0/1 and years 2/3 looking at fun poems, talking about writing, and playing a few drama games. Do you know what a 'fliger' is? Or even a 'muckalous?' Well guess what, the Maihiihi kids do, and so do I!

It was time to head back to Pukete School where the children are full of personality and passion. Today was about helping their top nine speech finalists reach their potential. I snuck a classroom visit in while there, as I've just written a brand new poem and wanted to trial it on some unsuspecting human guinea pigs. The great thing was........ they loved it, and even asked me to read it again. There's even a reading group with my name! Wow!

What a fabulous morning I had today at Berkley Intermediate School. Three hours in a year 7/8 class was a perfect place to hang out. I shared my journey, talked about the pitfalls of writing, discussed some tips to help, performed a few poems, a few drama activities, then got down to the serious job of writing. What a fantastic group of students. I loved seeing them writing and achieving. Thanks Miss A for having me.

Today I was off to the fabulous Pukete School as I was asked back again this year to help students with their speeches. I worked with year 4, 5 and 6 to help them get some ideas to write about, and find out what will make their speech stand out. It's scary for some children, so anything that makes it easier is goot. They were enthusiastic, taking all my advice on board. I enjoy being at Pukete, and I'll see all the talented finalists in a few weeks!

Ngahinapouri School was my last school visit for the week. I worked in 4 classrooms helping students prepare for upcoming speeches. Their theme is survival. It was interesting seeing how many different subjects they came up, like surviving without screens for a weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the year 7/8 as I don't get a lot of interaction with that level.

Yes this is me at Marist Primary School this afternoon, when I was lucky enough to meet one of the finalists in my poetry competition, who will be a published author early next year. I had time with a lot of young authors (and semi finalists) who entered the competition, It was great to meet them, and offer advice on their work. We got to talk about writing, helpful tips, and those troublesome problem areas. I also performed a few of my poems. A great way to spend an afternoon. xx

Wow at Waikowhai Primary School, Auckland. A city school with a fabulous country feel. It was like one big happy family, with super kids, and equally super staff. It's their book week, and I was lucky enough to spend time having fun with the junior classes. With a camping theme, we had fun using drama and rhyme. Then it was a poetry performance for the years 3 - 8, and what a great audience they made. Thanks Mrs L for surviving me staying at your house, what a star!

Holiday time, and I'm still out there meeting fabulous kids. Today I had an early start, and drove through the fog to Thames South School to work with some super duper kids. We used drama and poetry to help with their writing. They tell me they had fun, and I loved seeing them start to 'get it.' I was very happy as the other author was my lovely friend Dawn McMillan, so it was a bonus to spend time together.

It's the holidays, but not for me. I've just spent a wonderful weekend judging the Hamilton Performing Arts drama competition. Judge Judi has a ring to it don't you think. I got to watch dozen of children performing poetry, readings and acting. One of my favourite classes was where children performed the poems they'd written themselves. What a treat that was. I was delighted to hear a few children who had chosen one of my poems for the competitions. I was most impressed with the fact that I wrote out 300 reports by hand, and my hand survived the stress of the pen. I love my work.

On Saturday evening I was honoured to adjudicate the Hamilton drama contest, when 5 young performers from around the country got to present a 13 - 15 minute programme of poetry, prose, acting and improvisation, in order to seek nomination to represent the society at the National Young Performer Of The Year taking place in October. What a thrill to hear these talented young performers aged between 15 and 18 sharing their work.

A short drive away is the picturesque Glen Massey School. One hundred and six students were waiting in the hall for my poetry performance. What a great audience they were, ready to enjoy whatever fun was coming their way. They have some talented kids, as I saw when I got some involved in acting out poems. Thanks Ms M for organising my visit, and I loved talking to the kids after, they were amazing.

I was first at Pukemiro School back in 2014 as their Duffy Books role model, and it was pretty special to be back again working with incredible students. The day began with drama fun activities, followed by writing workshops. Wow, these kids got their brains into gear and the ideas they were coming up with were outstanding. Like the story about Jerry the mouse who discovers he's lactose intolerant when he eats some cheese in the fridge. Pure gold!

Hello year 3 and 4 at the outstanding St Peter Chanel primary school. It was a small group of 3 classrooms, and they were ready to have fun with poetry. They had a real sense of enthusiasm about them, along with their delightful teachers. I discovered I taught drama to one the teacher's children a few years ago, small world! After morning tea I got to spend special time with Room 8 talking about writing, and we wrote a fabulous 'jackiwa' poem about going parachuting.

This fabulous librarian, Sharon, asked me to entertain with some poetry at today's Grandparent's Day during book week at Cambidge Primary. Wow, doesn't even begin to describe how this was. It's one of the best days in my writing career. To share poetry and my books with so many interested and positive grandparents was truly rewarding, not to mention the incredible feedback I was given. The kids were happy to see me return. Yes I felt like a celebrity for a time.

Week 2 of the Double Happy Hautapu Happening happened on Tuesday. I am enjoying working with these fabulous year 7/8 students on their writing skills. Showing them that they are more capable than they often realise. It is rewarding to see children 'switch on' to that fact. Then it was the lunchtime drama group. What a talented and outgoing group they are. It's (good) noise. energy and enthusiasm from the moment I walk in. I am reveling in working with these kids.

I'm the luckiest person in the whole wide world, as I get to have so much fun at work. The kids at Pekerau Primary School in Te Awamutu were amazing, BUT the teachers I met were WOW WOW WOW. Made me want to go back to school if it's that much fun. The kids were really on to it when it came to giving me ideas for another Granny book. Some of my favourites were Granny Granny Joins The Army, and Granny Does karate. Sounds like fun. Thanks Mrs H for organising.

Hahaha look at my face. No wonders kids laugh when I am performing. Book week is approaching at Cambridge Primary School and I was invited along as their theme is 'Poetry and Rhyme to Feed the Mind.' I got a buzz when so many kids had read my books, or own a copy and were excited at my visit. One of my biggest fans attends CPS. The staff are supportive of my work and I am grateful. This is one of my favourite places. Even Les made the photos today.

Today was like a fireworks display at Hautapu School, as it was a 'double happy' day, I started with a drama and oral story telling based writing workshop. The kids had fun using drama to tell some fantastic stories based on one of my poems. I loved their feedback, if you say a story, then you can write it down. Right on! A short break, and it was week 2 of the lunchtime drama group. I'm loving working with these talented kids. They're enthusiastic and all get totally involved.

Hukanui School were BRILLIANT they were so much fun. They all brought their senses of humour with them, and I reckon they'd been having laughing out loud practice in class. Their huge smiles and happy faces just made me want to be even sillier. Thank you for enjoying my poetry, and giving me so many warm fuzzies, not to mention some great hugs. I greatly appreciated the staff as well. Thanks Mrs M for letting me visit your class and help write a poem. We rocked!

Ngahinapouri School won a poetry performance, and today was the day for me to head along and entertain some great kids. They were so full of life and energy, with an incredible sense of fun. That makes my job so much more enjoyable. Having teachers who join in the hilarity always adds to the whole experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Mr P's class talking about writing. I was honoured to read some of their work aloud. Some real talent in that room. Thanks everyone.

Whoop Whoop Inglewood Primary. What a great place to end our trip to Taranaki. Another fabulous teacher Mrs M, had organised my visit. After lunch on Friday is never easy, so thanks to all you fantastic kids for your positive welcome. I met two hilarious actors, who gave us all a huge laugh as they added a new twist to the end of a poem. A great visit with some special moments that I got to share with my cousins too. Thumbs up to the Principal, as she came for a look.

This was another case of no school can be as good, then you arrive, and think hmmm, maybe somewhere else can be a lot of fun too. Welboun Primary School was marvelously magical, and all ready to put their smiles and laughter into action. They were prepared to enjoy my poetry from the first line. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Mrs R's class afterward, and this picture was taken when I tested a fun new resource on them. I was blessed to meet some aspiring young writers. I loved being told I should be a comedienne! Hahahahaha.

Our next stop in Taranaki, was the stupendously outstanding Spotswood Primary School. What a glorious day it was. The mountain was in full view. The children waiting inside were equally spectacular as were the staff, especially Mr Williams, who was 'simply the best.' Just as well the students all brought their sense of humour with them, and their reactions delighted me. I was excited to run writing workshops, and very happy some children told me I'd inspired them. Thanks guys.

Freezing weather and rain outside, but the warmest smiles and greeting was waiting for us inside the door. What a treat to visit the coastal town of Mokau and the fabulous Mokau School. Small in student numbers, but huge in personality and talent. I met some of the most amazing young actors ever. Loved the character voice one young man came up with. Enjoyed spending time helping the kids with their poetry writing skills. Thanks to super friendly staff also. It was a great morning.

Thanks Ms Collins for such a fabulous time at Frankton Primary School. You must love going to school to spend time with all those great kids. I shared some poems from 'Have You Ever Seen A Sheep Dance?' and the kids were brilliant at the Digraph Dance. What a lot of fun we had. Someone asked me how I got to be so funny. I guess I was just born silly! We talked about made up words - does anyone out there know what the words 'moodle' and 'reekid' mean? You heard them first at Room 19 Frankton School. A place everyone should visit.

Hautapu School is like poetry, it rocks. I've spent time there over the last few years, and it was special to get to perform my poetry for the children. Normally they perform for me, as I have judged their annual speech competition, then worked with their finalists. What a fabulous audience they were, I really appreciated their enthusiasm and involvement. I had a wonderful time sharing ideas and my journey with year 7/8 students. Looking forward to the upcoming workshops. :)

Wow Rosie was loving this new book she got to read this morning. 'Jack Feels Big' is written by the fabulously talented Adam Millen, a young, first time author. This book is all about feelings, identifying them, and what you can do about it. A great addition to any library, aimed at 3 - 7 year olds. I was very lucky because Adam came to visit me and have a chat about books and getting started. I didn't realise how much I'd learnt until I got talking. Haha poor Adam. Anyone Rosie loves has to be special. Check out Adam's website at www.jackfeelsbig.co.nz

This morning I spent special time in Ms Rowe's class at the amazing St Columbas School which is one of my neigbourhood schools. I was greeted by an awesome class of year 2 students who were busy finding rhyming words for jump when I arrived. Wow they're clever, some even got the word chump which I was outstanding. We had fun with the 'digraph dance' poem, and I even shared two new poems. I also accidentally deleted my photos grrrrrr.

This afternoon was time to talk about poetry and writing at David St., School in Morrinsville. It was super to return to this fabulous school after a few years. One thing that hasn't changed is the kids are still brilliant stars with their talent shining through. I spent time with a group of talented young writers, sharing poetry, writing tips and learning from one another. It was the perfect way to end the day helping then realise they can find ideas and write.

You may have read that I'm the St Jo's expert, well I was in action again today, this time at St Joseph's Morrinsville where I was welcomed by a hall full of faces waiting to be entertained. I absolutely loved their enthusiasm and energy at having a laugh and eagerness to join in.. I was blessed to visit three classrooms after my poetry performance which always excites me. I really enjoy spending time with the year 7/8 students. Thanks Ms Hudson for organising.

Dargaville Primary was a barrel of laughs from start to finish. What a fabulous and delightful group of students, with some equally great teachers. They were ready for action, and their laughter and giggles inspired me to perform and feed off their energy. It was a hot day and they remained focused and engaged throughout. I loved the time I spent after with a group of talented young writers who even chose to stay and work with me for longer through their lunchtime. We got to talk about writing, then even squeezed in a drama game. I had a blast, thanks everyone!

St Joseph’s Dargaville was a great place to begin my day. I’ve visited a lot of St Joseph’s throughout the country, and say I am now the St Jo’s expert. The children were super excited to have a visitor, and in no time were fully involved having fun. I met another drama Queen here who lived up to her name by even using an accent in our performance. My favourite photo is the teachers joining in. They were as much fun as the kids! Thanks Ms Lyndsay for everything.

Marvellous Matakohe School was the perfect place to end a very busy day. The sense of fun was evident from the moment we walked into the hall. Sixty outstanding students all ready and waiting to join in the fun of poetry, and fun was just what we all had together. This part of the country is gorgeous so I can understand why they all smile. Thanks to all the staff for being supercalifragilistic, as this makes such a big difference for school visits. I snuck in half an hour in a classroom after the poetry performance, and you know how much I enjoy that. I even gained a new grandson. Everyone was superb, thanks a million for everything.

What an interesting start I'm having to this year. Before schools are back into the swing of things, it's a chance for me to get out and about. I was very lucky to be asked to be a guest speaker at the RTLB cluster meeting at Waingaro Camp in Ngaruawahia, held today. What a great time, and everyone enjoyed my poetry performance. It's always fun when I get adults up and joining in. Teachers are a dedicated bunch and I applaud what they do.

This photo was taken just a few days ago on the beautiful Fijian Island of Dravuni. I found a great spot under the trees, and was lucky enough to get to share my books with some of the children as I read them my poems. They learnt some Maori words too which they enjoyed. I left a set of books for them to keep. I was welcomed into their class by their lovely teacher and had a good look around. There were so many smiles and hugs that made it a magical day.
2017 - HERE WE COME

Well folks my work fun is over now for 2016. The year ended last night when Les and I went to Cambridge for their district speech finals. Twenty two talented young students from years 5 to 8, representing eleven schools were presenting their topics to an enthusiastic audience. I'd been lucky enough to work on an individual basis with five children from Hautapu, Goodwood and Cambridge Primary Schools. They all did themselves proud, and I was brimming with excitement for their achievement. To top the evening off, four of the five picked up an award, and with only seven awards that was a great result. The remaining student may not have won a prize, but certainly gave the audience a huge laugh as he showed his comedic skills. The perfect way to end my year!

This was my last school visit for the year. I couldn't have chosen a better place than Frankton Primary, because it's one of my local schools. It was really great to meet so many 'neighbourhood' children. The kids were brilliant, and it always gives me a smile when so many want to be involved in acting out my poems. What an amazing job they did, a bit out there and not scared to have fun. After the poetry performance, I spent time in Whaea Jo's class where I got to know her class a little more. We talked about writing, and I shared more poetry. I absolutely loved my time there.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to spend a day in Te Kuiti with the talented children from St Joseph's. Their school show opens this week and I offered to help out by running a rehearsal for their director (my clever daughter), who was unavailable. 'Conundrum' is fun, and I enjoyed seeing what the children had been working on over the term. Always special to see a production come together. Good luck!

Thanks Greenpark School for such a fantastic visit in Tauranga today. I thoroughly enjoyed entertaining hundreds of awesome kids with fun poetry and we had a lot of laughs together. Spending time in Miss Harris's class was very special, as each child had written a 'jackiwa' poem, which they presented to me to take home. Thanks to the talented writers for their company during the writing workshop.

Well done to these two fabulous young speechmakers at Hautapu School, where I was lucky enough to be this morning, as I was asked to judge. There were some fabulous speeches, and entertaining performances by eight talented students. As a bonus I got to hear the non judged speeches of the junior school. The talent coming up through the ranks was obvious. Good luck for the next round, and I'm looking forward to working with you before the finals.

Haha, isn't this a great photo of some of the students at Karangahake School, in the stunning Karangahake Gorge. I was lucky to get to spend two whole days here. Day 1 was fun drama activities across the school, and you can see what fun we all had. Day 2 was writing across the whole school. Seeing those children who struggle with working in groups or in front of an audience, achieve, was an absolute reward.

Sleeping cats at wonderful Waimata School just out of Waihi. I'd been there in term 3 as their Duffy Books role model, and was honoured to be asked back again. This time to run drama based oral storytelling workshops with their students right through the whole school. Loads of excitement and enthusiasm, as the children got fully involved. I finished the say spending time with their keen young writers. Great day!

I forgot to take my camera when I was back at Cambridge Primary, so snapped this fabulous shot of their Enviro garden. Isn't it stunning. I was privileged to judge the senior speech finals and what a great line up. Great topics like Victorian children, dreams, Harrods, dogs, money and more which informed and entertained. I look forward to watching the winners in the district finals. Well done every one.

I left Goodwood School on a high, and this was to continue when I drove into Tauwhare School, a short way up the road. These trips remind me I live in a beautiful country. I was greeted by four friendly and welcoming school ambassadors who did their school proud. My poetry performance was full of fun and energy, with so many brilliant students keen to get up and be involved. Loved my time here, and want to return.

This week has been one for visiting country schools. They're always fun as they often have a more relaxed open feel. Goodwood School just out of Cambridge was absolutely brilliant. What a friendly bunch, and that's just the staff! I had the pleasure of performing three poetry performances across the school, before sharing 'speech' and poetry tips and techniques with year 3/4 and 5/6 students. They were great.

Speaking of favourite schools, 'Hello Maihiihi' full of personality, professionalism and fun. I was blessed to spend the entire day here working with the children on drama based oral storytelling, leading to writing. The kids were totally engaged and hooked in, coming up with great ideas. A favourite was Mrs Goop the dinosaur teacher. I also presented a short workshop for their community on reading and writing, how it's connected, and tips to help at home.

It's speeches time at Cambridge Primary, another fabulous school here in the beautiful Waikato. The speeches are well on the way to being completed, ow it's time for performance tips. I find it frustrating when I hear children with great speeches, but they lack performance skills. I applaud Cambridge Primary for giving all their students a chance to do well. I enjoy seeing the growth in confidence and helping children reach their potential.

Sunset School is one of my very favourite schools to spend time. The staff room is just the best. I wasn't booked to visit here, but while working at MindPlus I was hijacked by some of Whaea Prue's fantastic students who were excited to see me at their school. They even asked Les if I could stay a bit longer to visit their class. How could I refuse, so we found time to share some poetry and we were ll happy. Thanks.

I sure was lucky when Lynmore Primary School in Rotorua thought having me visit to do a poetry performance for their students was an excellent idea. I have to agree, as I got to meet yet more outstanding, funny, warm, welcoming students and staff. What a blast I had with their year 4, 5 and 6 children. It was simply the best, and I loved seeing them discover the joy of language, and learning that poetry rocks.

I must have have done something right last year when
I visited MindPlus School in Rotorua, as I was delighted
to be asked back again to work with their talented young
writers over three days. What a blessing to spend time, reading and listening to the work of such amazing young talent. I then get to share tips and offer advice to help them hone their skill. Their teacher Sue is one of the most incredible teachers I've ever had the privilege to work with. She has such an insightful approach to teaching and understanding her student's needs. Wow, I sure was blessed when I was approached by Ms B to spend some time in her fabulous class at Selwyn Primary School in Rotorua this week. It's a school I enjoy visiting, and this class was no exception. Great questions and sharing by some super awesome students, followed by fun poetry sharing, including getting some of them involved and finding their inner drama kings and queens. Thanks for a great time and the brilliant flowers and bestest ever card. You rock.

The school holidays gives me a chance to get out in the community. I was invited to the Matamata VIP (Vision Impaired) monthly meeting to talk about my writing and share some poetry. What a great morning, with brilliant hospitality, tasty morning tea, and two gorgeous guide dogs who look as if they were either bored or mesmerised!

Term 3 was full on for me. When it ended, the following day I was at the Te Awamutu Performing Arts festival helping run the weekend, and also watching my drama students achieve some great results. Most promising newcomer and 12 and over. 12 to 14 championship and scholarship, cup for improvisation. Cup for entertaining to the highest degree. A highlight is who wins the supreme award and my granddaughter was the 2016 winner. Her sister was Highly Commended. Well done girls.

The last week of Term 3 took me back to one of my favourite places, Cambridge Primary School. I was asked to help the students with their upcoming speeches. It was time to talk about topics, which are often a stumbling block for many children. It's about finding their strengths and life experiences, and coming up with a topic that can come from the heart. Then looking at what makes a speech stand out, such as a good introduction and strong conclusion. I tell them just like a story, it needs a beginning, middle and ending. I forgot my camera, so this photo is of their 2 fabulous finalists last year who went on to be winners.

This morning I was honoured to work with a group of talented young writers from Otorohanga Primary, Otorohanga South, Maihiihi (who hosted thanks) and Waitomo Caves. I had the pleasure of not only hearing their winning entries in a recent writing competition, but also reading it aloud to an appreciative audience. The writers were blown away by how good their stories sounded.

It was good to get back to St Mark’s and reconnect with both teachers and students, where I had a few sessions booked. Poetry performances for the junior school, along with writing workshops for years 4, 5 and 6. I met some talented children. My favourite moments are when a child begins by saying they hate writing, but when I leave they're wanting to get back to class to write a story as they have an idea. These children reinforced the value of drama for storytelling. Thanks!

Sunnyhills School provided me with smiles, and real belly laughs. It was a brilliantly rewarding experience. When staff are so friendly they provide great role models for their students. Poetry performances sure did rock. It was one of the best. Thanks John for your interactive sense of fun and involvement. The writing workshop after was an amazing experience, seeing children finding their inner writer they didn't know existed. I'd come back anytime. One idea kids!

Thanks Pakuranga Heights for one of the best days ever. From start to finish the day flowed, and I was made to feel a part of the school. Thanks to the amazing staff for their support. I knew from the moment I walked in for years 5/6 poetry performance that the day was going to be something special. 500 + amazing students. I enjoyed seeing the kids writing, and sharing their work. Never had a baby born during PD before! The shortest labour on record.

A wrap up event for National Poetry Day took place here in Hamilton yesterday. 35 great kids from 10 schools rocked up ready to go. With drama and writing workshops, followed by a poetry soiree, time whizzed by. Sandra Timlin, Kenzi Larsen and myself were the tutors, and had a great day.Seeing kids embracing language then performing their work was brilliant. I've already heard from one mum saying her son was inspired. Oral language and poetry were the stars. Result!

This week I've been spending a bit of time with some of Pukete School's amazingly talented young speechmakers. Yesterday I worked with the finalists on their performance, and I loved how they listened and made some minor changes to their presentations. This morning I judged their final, and wow were they fantastic. I was extremely impressed with the quality of their speeches, and topics. A disappointment was that there were no boys. I judged with a fabulous young teacher, and we had some real tough decisions to make. It was great to see the top 3 all get a medal. Thanks Mrs A for outstanding organisational skills. Job well done Pukete!

Was great to be working with local children at Te Totara School for their book week. Organised by the fabulous Mrs Simms aka ‘Super Book Girl’ or Detective Simms, with spies and detectives as a theme. I got to work with hundreds of gorgeous year 0 to 2 children over the day. We had so much fun looking for clues. This is a photo of some of the super heroes.Thank you to the teacher who thanked me as some of her boys were straight into class wanting to write. Result!

The Lions National Secondary Schools Young Speechmaker took place on Saturday 13th August at St Catherine's in Wellington. I have a passion for helping young people achieve their best at performance, and public speaking is a real love of mine. When I was asked to be a judge I was honoured and in esteemed company. This amazing young orator from Tokoroa was declared the winner, and receives a trip to the USA and Canada, as a reward. What an amazing opportunity the Lions clubs offer these talented young speakers from around the country.

As we walked into the office at Newtown School we were greeted by the amazing Rachel along with the Principal, thanking myself and Les for visiting. This was greatly appreciated. The hall was full of eager children ready to enjoy poetry. They were an interactive audience, full of energy and sparkle. I especially enjoyed meeting Frances, an extremely talented young poet who shared two of her poems. I was honoured she let me read one of them aloud to her peers. I met some very special people here, and admit I fell a lot in like with a gorgeous city and some gorgeous children who stole my heart.

Kenakena School on the beautiful Kapiti Coast was a special place for me to visit, as they have a young talented writer as a student who is published in one of my books. Meeting Imogen was a highlight for me. Her mum and dad being there was a bonus. What a great time we had, lots of laughs and fun enjoying poetry. I spent a little time in Imogen’s class after the performance, and that is something I always enjoy. Not happy with that, I even got to sneak into a couple of other 5/6 classes and share poems and have a bit of fun. Thankyou.

St Mary’s Catholic School Foxton was a real ‘run through’ visit as I only had a little bit of time. They said they'd be delighted to have me pop into school even if briefly. They’d had their production the night before, so it was great to meet them when they were still on a high from their show, including some children that love poetry. Small schools are always special in their own way, and often seem more like a family. Thanks for having me.

Foxton Beach School. Wow, wow, wow what an amazing experience. It began with year 4/5, who'd been encouraged to dress up as book characters. I got to meet Superman, Darth Vader, Princess Aurora, Badjelly and loads of other fabulous characters. The juniors were excited and enthusiastic. I had a bonus of doing an impromptu speech writing/performing tips with year 7/8 before sharing a few poems. A highlight was walking back into year 4/5 and they were busy writing my ‘jackiwa’ poems, what a delight to share their writing. Les has to drag me away as I was having so much fun.

A special past drama student of mine has children at Raetihi School, so a special place to be. We started off with a lively poetry performance. I loved the positive response from the children. We had a few ‘stars’ join in and entertain everyone too. I also got to share some of their fabulous poetry writing. A funny one was about the dog who did a fart and blew his ‘bum’ apart. I was sorry to miss Atlas’s class as she was waiting to talk to me, and I hope she liked the message I left.

Well it's that time of year again, whether you love them or hate them, they have to be done. yes folks, it's.....drum roll please.....Speeches. They can be a struggle for some children and I was lucky enough to be at Pukete School in Hamilton this morning to help with tips about topic, content, intro and summary. A great school with super kids and staff. These two look pretty happy! Look forward to judging their finals.

Last stop of this trip was St Joseph’s Onehunga. Another special school, as I have family connections here. The kids were buzzing and excited which makes for a lively visit. I was greeted with an awesome power point about …..me, that the students had put together. Wow, I felt like a real celebrity. We had fun performing. I was given amazing rainbow flowers to thank me by an equally amazing Mrs Harris. I met a delightful young man who I'd liked to have brought home with me!

The supercalifragilisticexpialidocious St Mary’s at Ellerslie was the most special school visit ever, because this is the very same school I spent 8 years at way back in the dark ages. I was excited from the minute I arrived. Thanks Helen for making it happen. The kids were enthusiastic and positive about absolutely everything from start to finish. So many memories for me and all those hugs made it even better. I'd love to have stayed all day it was just fantastic!

I’d need pages to tell you about my incredible day spent at Willow Park School in Birkenhead with the year 5/6 team. Thanks Miss Knights for asking me, you're a legend. Also all other incredible teachers involved. From poetry performance to writing workshops, we covered the lot. I had a blast from start to finish, and even the downpour didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. Thoroughly enjoyed working with the writers and seeing talent oozing out of them. Well done!

Thanks to St Mary Mackillop in Mangere for such a varied and interesting visit. From delightful juniors to talented seniors and a quick visit with years ¾ in between, it was full on and fabulous. I was amazed to read all the great ‘jackiwa’ poems the seniors had written, and touched to be given some to keep. I always enjoy spending time with budding young authors and answering questions. I had great fun in the junior class as we did 'the diagraph dance' together. Thanks.

Te Rapa School was somewhere I was keen to visit as they already have my books in their library. This was a good opportunity for them to meet the author…….me! It was also special, as one of their teachers was someone I knew as a young girl in Te Kuiti. To add to that, I discovered that another student's mother had been one of my daughter’s best friends. It was like one big happy family. I enjoyed sharing my poems, and valued the time I spent after talking to those children who love writing. Thanks for a great visit.

Thanks Pukete School for letting me come along and interrupt Year 4’s morning. What an engaging audience they were, full of questions and answers. When it was time to go, it was hug time, and I love hugs from special people. I had some lovely comments as the children were leaving, such as, “Judi, I really like your sense of humour,” and “You’re the best poem writerer ever." Thanks to the brilliant teachers.

Kihikihi School was my last visit at the end of of long day, and it was helpful to receive a warm welcome as soon as i stepped inside the front door. It’s never easy expecting kids to sit still when it’s nearly time to go home, and it was good to see their eager faces and be greeted with lots of hugs, then farewelled with a whole lot more. At this performance, was one of the most amazing teachers ever, as soon as I opened my mouth she was on side with her reactions. She was a true star, as was the DP and her gorgeous puppy.

Woo hoo Kiokio School, what a vibrant and fun bunch of students and teachers were ready and waiting for me when I arrived. It was go, go go, from start to finish, with lots of audience involvement and laughter. The staff were brilliant at playing along. I then got a sneak preview of the juniors wonderful poems for their upcoming group poetry performance. Their audience will be wowed by their talent. I was given a reminder of it being a small world, as I discovered I have known the Principal’s parents for years.
Another super country school.
Another super country school.

St Joseph’s School is always a great place to spend time. There was something calming about arriving early and having the chance to join in prayer time with the juniors. We shared our wishes and blessings. Then it was time for fun with diagraphs, with some singing and dancing. I was lucky to be able to spend time in two other classrooms sharing poems. I love this school, as when I walk in to at least one class, someone says, “Oh look, it’s Judi Billcliff.” For a moment in time I feel famous haha. One of my favourite places.

Maihiihi School was well worth the drive into the country, and what a picturesque part of the country it is. The whole school were waiting for me, and seemed very excited to have a visitor. What fun we had sharing poems and having a laugh. I love the family atmosphere found in many country schools, which gives me the warm fuzzies. While the kids were great, I’d have to say my time in the staffroom was a real highlight, and I look forward to visiting again. Thanks.

Paterangi School was my first stop on this tour, and I wouldn't find a warmer welcome anywhere. I was greeted by a lot of gorgeous children in their pj’s, which got us off to a happy start, especially the young man in the tuxedo who said he was dressed for a wedding, haha those words came back to bite. The kids loved seeing their Principal join in, but sadly he was in the losing team. From juniors to seniors it was great to see everyone getting involved. Thanks for a fun time.

Kelvin Road School, Papakura, where you find dedicated teachers, and genuinely warm friendly students with a sense of fun. They were open to whatever was about to happen. Seeing their laughter as we enjoyed poetry together reminded me why I do what I do, and how it doesn't even seem like work. I enjoyed hearing their poetry finalists and giving them tips with their performances, as that is what I love doing. I also got to meet a very talented young author who is into writing in a big way. There is always something special about meeting someone else who understands me.

Opaheke School at Papakura, had a warm greeting waiting inside on a chilly day. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mrs S’s year 7/8 students, and loved hearing some of their poems which I look forward to publishing on my website. I shared an ANZAC poem, and appreciated their response. We were blessed to return for the year 3 and 4 assembly. Their chuckles were infectious as they were ready to laugh at everything. It was as if they were ready for the show and I was it! A highlight was when I realised I’d known one of their teachers since she was a little girl. A great day.

St Marks, Pakuranga students looked so smart in their uniforms sitting there waiting for us. It was rewarding to meet another group of enthusiastic students, ready to get involved and enjoy poetry. They were buzzing between items, and ready for the next one. We had a lot of fun in the staff room at lunchtime, and appreciated their support.

Pakuranga Heights is a funky school with some brand new classrooms. All year 3 and 4 children were waiting for us in the hall. They were so quiet, we didn’t think anyone was even in there. They were very enthusiastic, but also extremely respectful. They had some great young actors here. We were walked out and given farewell hugs. One delightful girl told me she’s going to go to my website every day after school! I've already heard from a few children, so maybe she already has! It felt like a real family experience.

Onewhero School is somewhere I had never been before, and what a glorious part of the country it’s in. We did learn a valuable lesson, never trust google maps for directions, as a paper road isn’t any good for driving on. All that was forgotten, when we arrived to a hall full of eager children. I’d been expecting to work with a year 7/8 class and what a great treat to get to share my poems with the entire school. They were appreciative and enthusiastic. The staff were equally great, and thanks Maxine for sharing your lunch with Les.

Kimihia School in Huntly was first stop on this tour. I’ve never been to this part of Huntly before, and with the sun shining on the lake, wow it was magical. We were greeted with equally sunny smiles and personalities. With the hall out due to kapahaka, we had to use the library, so we had a bit of a revolving door with kids in and out. I would’ve loved more time with the seniors, but that’s a good reason to return. A teacher told me it was great to see all the kids smiling.

This was my first visit to St Peter’s Catholic Cambridge and it was my last stop of the day. I had such a friendly welcome from the principal which always helps me feel at home. I was then greeted by a class full of boys, (and a few girls) with loads of energy. I shared some poems, then they had fun performing one of them for me. Great to see them working in teams and coming up with their own ideas. I was very impressed to meet a young girl who has written a lot of her own books. Nice to meet someone who I know 'gets' me.

My day started at Cambridge East School for a proposed short visit with Year 5/6 talking about SNAIL Mail Day and encouraging kids to write letters. I also got to share a few poems with them which is always good in my books. I stayed on when I had the chance to visit with the new entrants and year 1 and 2 children. What a delight they were. If that wasn't, enough, I snuck in a flying visit to Room 3 as well. What great kids and I loved their enthusiasm. Cambridge East is special as some of their past students are published in my books.

How I love visiting Cambridge Primary School.Visiting with Erin and Jo’s children meant I was guaranteed to have a blast. I read a lot of poems, and when the lunch bell went, some children went, "ohhhh no, please keep reading." I had a special celebrity moment, when a young girl from another class walked in, and on seeing me, literally shook with excitement saying ‘It’s Judi Billcliff!’ As I was leaving, two girls came running over to me to tell me they'd been in the library reading my books. Kids loving poetry. Fantastic!

Hamilton East School is a gracious old school founded in 1872, the oldest in Hamilton I believe. I was greeted with open arms and smiling faces. 100 plus Year 5/6 students, (and their inspiring teachers) were ready and waiting to enjoy poetry, and what fun we had. I was extremely lucky to spend time in Ms Richmond's class because one of her students had written to me personally, and I offered them a visit. He's a star, and he smiled the whole time, except in this photo. I could've stayed all day. Thanks for the hugs and great questions. You made my work seem like a holiday.

Aberdeen School here in Hamilton is like my 'local.' I visited a new entrant class where we shared fun poems and action rhymes. Didn't they pull great faces! We did some shaking and some shimmying and they rocked. I also spent time in a fabulous year 6 class talking to them about their upcoming poetry competition. What a great chance to sneak in some poetry readings and do some acting as well. They were great!

How I love those smaller more rural schools. Ouruhia School didn't disappoint me as we had this incredible feeling of family. The Principal greeted us, and like everyone else was so friendly and welcoming. Les and I felt as if we belonged. Once again I met staff who embraced poetry and rhyme. We all had lots of laughs and chuckles. I met some keen young writers, and a few 'serial huggers.' These students were so natural with enquiring minds which was shown in their questions. A little girl asked me if I'd be her drama teacher!

What a great time we had at Isleworth School. Once again I got to spend time with year 5 and 6 students, and their delightfully funny teachers, whose love of poetry was why I was there. These children's smiles, sense of fun and friendliness gave me warm fuzzies. Their total belly shaking laughs at my poems was inspiring. They presented me with a poem they'd written about me. I even snuck in a visit to the new entrants class. I was buzzing when I left this wonderful school, and the year 5/6 said they were the same. Job done!

Rangiora Borough School one of the best. The DP told me I'd been a real find, well guess what, I reckon you were a find for me too. I had the most amazing morning. It began sharing poetry with years 5/6, who liked it so much they came back after break. Then I spent time with the young writers group. Meeting Chris, a kindred spirit, was a gift seeing a teacher instill her students with a love of language and drama. Loved the poem they wrote about me. Then it was time with their young debating team. Good luck guys. I was in my element.

Westmount School was a totally different kind of school. It's not your normal setting, as it's to be found on the 4th floor of an inner city building. No playground here, but an indoor space for games. The children were lovely and so enthusiastic about poetry and asking me what it's like to be an author. They joined in a performance and had a good laugh as they enjoyed watching their classmates get involved. The staff were extremely welcoming, and one even came just to watch me in action.

Grantlea Downs Downs would have to be one of the prettiest schools I've ever been to. They even have a resident dog called Sophie, who belongs to the caretaker and wanders in and out of classrooms. I was blessed by having the chance to work with Miss Mehrtens class. I ran a drama module from 'Poetry Rocks' and Miss M was impressed at how well it had worked. She was fascinated watching different dynamics, and impressed how everyone had joined in and succeeded.

Bluestone School was next on the agenda. This is a school I wanted to visit for two main reasons. Firstly it has a talented young writer (pictured) who is published in 'Granny Goes Bungy Jumping.' Secondly their librarian Mrs Ross has been very supportive of my work. I'm so glad I went there, as I had a blast with 120 Year 5/6 students whom I entertained for an hour. The wonderful thing was seeing them enjoying poetry. They laughed when we performed Little Red Riding Hood. They're keen to get involved with SNAIL MAIL too, yee haa.

Our South Island tour started at Sacred Heart Primary in Timaru. I was very lucky as I got to work with the junior school up to year 3, including some children who were having their very first day at school. We got so busy having fun, jumping, spinning and bowing, that I forgot to ask if they had any questions. They had to email me to ask all the things they wanted to know. The Principal thanked us for our visit. Thanks to the fabulous staff, especially Miss W for organising everything, and for such positive feedback.

It was back to the Waikato Show again performing poems to an enthusiastic crowd, which was larger than yesterday, but it's not hard to be bigger than no audience. :) Each one of them was greatly appreciated by me as a performer. What a shame to have so many children onsite, and organisers not getting out there and getting more people into experience live storytelling, poetry performance and singing and dancing. But I had a wonderful time and also got to watch others like the talented author Sarah Johnson.

Hamilton's Waikato Show is on in Hamilton at the moment. They have a few authors, storytellers and musicians performing their work and entertaining the children in the stage area out the back of the main exhibition area. Sadly the organisers didn't account for how long it would take the children to get from the front door through the main halls and out to the performance area, so when it was my time to be on stage, there was only one child in sight. I took her up on to stage and shared my books with her. Light was terrible for photos. Better luck tomorrow I hope. The joys of being a performance poet!

Koromatua School is a great location for a country school, just off the main highway nestled among the trees. Thank you to Ms Shore and Corinna for letting me come in to their class and have fun with their wonderful juniors by reading poems and being drama kings and queens. They acted out being little kiwis, then we played a trick on their teachers to see how good they were at doing the actions. The kids thought they were better! Thank you for telling me you love my books.

Room 4 at Hamilton West School was the perfect place to spend a little time yesterday morning. It was really special to meet these 23 great kids and their happy and friendly teacher Ms R. I got a super welcome, as when I walked in there was one of my poems A3 size sitting there for all to read. I got to read 'Mr T Rex' to them, and then share some more of my poems. They also joined in by acting out a few rhymes and they were brilliant at listening. Thanks for a lovely time, and all the goodbye hugs. Hope to see you again.

Yesterday, Sunday, was time for something a little bit different as I headed out to Cambridge. for the monthly Waikato meeting of the Society of authors. Eighteen like minded people filled the room, and it was a delight to share my journey and some of my work with a fantastic group of talented people. As I was their guest speaker, they shouted me lunch which made me feel pretty special. It was a great social occasion. I felt as if I left having made new friends. This is a picture of myself and the well known Tui Allen, author extraordinaire. Go on, google Tui and be impressed.

HAPPY St Patrick's day for the 17th March. I was lucky enough to have been asked by Waikato Literacy, to present workshops on using poetry and rhyme to enhance oral language. My worst fears that no one would enrol were quickly allayed as the room filled with teachers keen to listen and hear my message. I met some some wonderful people and was able to share my passion about getting kids talking. My go to phrase is, they can't speak it until they can say it. Now I look forward to visiting some of their schools.

Today it was a return to Crawshaw School. This time was doing Reader's Theatre in Rooms 12 and 13. We worked with 2 poems, "Not Now' and "The Wizard.' Part of the sessions involved acting the poems out in two different ways, with and without words. Sadly, we ran out of time, so I left them all practicing. My favourite moment was when the bell had gone for morning tea, and nearly all the class were still inside working on their pieces. I'm looking forward to going back to see what they come up with.

Getting back into my school visits got off to a flying start today at Crawshaw School, where I got to spend time in 3 classrooms and meet some great kids, oozing with potential. I loved the dancing in Whaea Stacey's class, and the enthusiasm in Whaea Tamara's class. I then fell in love with Whaea Vicky and her fabulous kids. What fun we had with poetry, and I loved how engaged you all were and wanted me to visit again, like after lunch haha. Thank you for that.

Sunset Primary School Rotorua, here I come.. I had one of my best school visits ever. A huge thank you to Whaea Prue and Whaea Maureen for having me, (and my daughter Becky who was on holiday) in Room 7. What a fantastic class full of super stars. Thank you for being so involved, and telling me you love my poems, and didn't want me to go. I'd love to come back and visit you all again. Ka kite ano!

Monday saw my last sessions at St Columbas for 2015. I developed a great rapport with these fabulous students over the three sessions we spent together. Seeing their growth in oral language and confidence was rewarding. Poetry and drama will always get children talking, and without oral language you won't get written language. Thanks to the awesome staff who were so supportive and for the great feedback. Look forward to working with you in 2016.

'Fiasco In The Forest.' my latest writing project - a fun production for schools. It is a Whodunnit with a pantomime twist. Thanks so much to the fabulous Mrs S and her students in Room 17 at Marian School for letting me interrupt their classroom routine to do a reading of the script. It went amazingly well, and I'm absolutely delighted with both the result and their feedback. They told me it was funny and they loved it. Email me if you'd like to see the script.

I had a really interesting and successful three sessions at
St Columbas yesterday here in Hamilton. Rhyme'N'Reason is a new poetry/drama based course all about encouraging children to love language and find their inner writer, and improve their storytelling. Already looking forward to getting back for the next three sessions tomorow. I've been working with three groups years 3/4 5/6 and 7/8 and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these great young people.

Goodness gracious what a face. Is she celebrating that drama classes are over for the year? Or is she distraught there will be no more dramatic fun at my home until 2016? Yesterday was the last class for the year, and what a year these fabulous girls have had. My pupils have won numerous awards for acting, poetry, improvisation and most promising competitor. I love teaching them, they are a gift, and seeing them blossom is totally rewarding. You'll find more photos on Rainbow Poetry NZ facebook page if interested.

Recognise these two good looking young dudes from a few posts down the page? Remember that they were first equal in the Cambridge Primary speech finals recently, and were to be competing in the district finals. Well folks it was last night, and drum roll please............. there were 21 fabulous young students each presenting their speech. I've been working with both boys, and they've listened to advice and taken it on board. I was so proud of them when they picked up the Junior commendation and also the Judges Special award. What a great achievement for them and for their school. Way to go Cambridge Primary.

Yesterday I had a fabulous morning in Room 10 at Crawshaw School, where I got to share my poems with a great group of kids. We had a lot of laughs. They even had a go at a drama game which was neat, as it was something new for them. One of our granddaughters is in Room 10 which made the visit even better. Thanks for having me Mrs D, you're a star.

Thanks Lynette, Megan, Mel and Jennifer for having me at Te Kowhai Kindergarten, where I read some of my actions rhymes and poems. It was neat to see everyone get involved and have fun together. We did 'Tahi Rua Toru,' Little Mr Kiwi,' and 'Jump, Jump, Jump.' We pulled faces and looked happy and sad, and scary. The children scared me! I read two brand new rhymes which the children loved. After morning tea I even got to use a hot glue gun and help make something. Te Kowhai Kindergarten is a great place to visit.

I was back at Cambridge Primary for the senior speech finals. I've listened to hundreds of speeches in my time. This was one of the highest overall standards. Everyone did a great job, with excellent topics from The Christchurch Earthquake, to cranes, the brain, language, space, fairy tales and the list goes on. Here I am with two young stars who were 1st equal. Can't wait for the district final in a few weeks.

Cambridge Primary was my workplace yesterday where I ran a session on 'How to present your speech.' I love working in this school. It was great to see the kids taking my ideas on board and tweaking their speeches. To help a child present their ideas is a real delight for me. I'm excited about the final.

I was delighted to be asked to judge the fantastic Hautapu School's senior speeches last week. I know what talented young speakers they have, and one of my real loves is the
art of public speaking. I wasn't to be disappointed with the range of topics. The quality of research and content of all speeches was outstanding. Getting up and speaking to your peers is no easy task, and all credit to everyone for doing such a great job. What a necessary life skill this is to have.

Where do you find great kids with lots of talent? Let me tell you - at St Joseph's in Fairfield. I was lucky enough to spend time yesterday when I worked with students from the amazing Miss Frater's book club groups. The idea was to get kids enjoying language and increasing their awareness of books. I used my poetry books (of course,) and there was fun galore when they acted out one of the poems. They all left with a smile on their face. Result! Thanks Miss Frater.

Just when you think the holidays are here and it's time to relax, it's time to step onto the stage and get performing. I had 9 drama students competing at the Te Awamutu drama festival. I've been involved for 34 years, and go back each year to help run the weekend. My students won the Under 8 and 12-14 scholarships, runners up in the under 10 and 12 - 14. Won trophies for acting, action poem, highest mark in an improvisation class, and bible reading. Good luck to Helen who is off to Young Performer Of the year in 2 weeks.

You may have read about the fantastic opportunity being offered to in the greater Waikato area, for a child to receive up to $1,000 a year for drama tuition. The Mendis Drama Scholarship was awarded to not one, but two fabulously talented young Te Kuiti girls, Christina from St Joseph's,
and Daisy from Pukenui Primary School. The sponsors
kindly agreed to help out both girls to attain their dream of attending drama lessons, The winners were announced at
the Te Awamutu Performing Arts drama competitions, held last weekend. Both girls did their schools proud, and were equally excited to have won. We now look forward to seeing them perform next year at the festival. Congratulations girls, and a HUGE THANK YOU to our generous sponsors.

Marian School was a great way for me to end Term 3. it was organised by the fabulous Anastasia pictured left with me. It began with an energetic and lively session of performance poetry during lunchtime. I felt very honoured to have so
any great students give up their lunch time to listen to my poems, and ask me questions. Then it was off for an hour with a group of highly talented young writers (3 of whom
re published) to run a creative writing workshop. Thanks for your input Mrs Martin. Feedback was positive, and I look forward to receiving some of your writing.

It's that time of year - Speeches! Karapiro School kindly asked me to be one of their judges for this great event. I
enjoy going into schools to work with children and help
them choose their topic and also look at what makes a
good speech. Then I go back and give them performance
tips. I judge a lot of speeches, and it always excites me to
see students presenting speeches to their peers.
Particularly those speeches that makes you think, or even change your mind. Karapiro students did just this with speeches about sugar, and changing our flag, taking out the top two spots. Did you know there are 7 teaspoons of sugar in small packet of raisins? Good luck for the finals.

Whitikahu school has been a supporter of mine from day one in my writing career. It was really great to go and spend a little time, meeting their fabulous kids, reading my poems to them, and having fun. The principal and staff were incredibly welcoming and positive which made my visit even better. I met a young man, who writes and sells comics. Thanks Whitikahu for a super visit and I hope to come back.

St Patricks School in Taupo, what can I say WOW WOW WOW. From the moment I arrived and found a sign on the library door saying 'Judi was coming' I had fun. Three sessions of students from year 3 to year 6. Lots of questions, lots of poems, and a lot of laughs. I got told I was super cool and awesome, and write great poems. How can you not love a visit when you get such compliments. I had a fabulous helper, pictured, who squealed better than any girl could. Amazing staff who made me welcome, Please ask me back!

Marotiri School is another country school but a bigger one situated between Wharepapa South and Turangi. One of the unexpected things about my visit was, the Principal had her own copy of 'Granny Does The Boogey,' as her sister had given it to her as a present, to share with her grandchildren. The students asked me some excellent questions, like where do I write, and am I ever scared to write. Love it when kids come up and ask me where they can buy my books.

There's nothing quite like a small country school, and Wharepapa South School is no exception to this. A warm and friendly welcome with a delightful group of children, and their equally fabulous teachers. We had a question and answer time, and I got to share some of my poems with the students. These children are extra lucky, as the brilliant illustrator Deb Hinde lives close by, and is a visitor to their school. I could have stayed all day, but I was on a tight schedule and before i was ready to go, had to leave. I hope to be back very soon.

One of the talented young people I worked with yesterday at the Waikato Literacy Young Writer's Conference held at Morrinsville Intermediate. This was a special young girl I've met before, and what a lovely surprise when she walked in to the classroom. I was honoured to be asked to run poetry workshops for these incredibly talented and focused young writers. Other authors and illustrators were all well known in their field. Writers - Des Hunt, Maria Gill, Michael Oehley and Feana Tu'akoi and the fabulous illustrator Deb Hinde. What an amazing opportunity for young writers to have. I found it a great experience. Don't forget to send me your writing.

I spent so much fabulous time at Aberdeen School that I needed two posts to share about it. Room 16 was a very special class to spend some time. We had a lot of laughs, and talked about my journey as an author, with some great questions. My granddaughter spends her days in this class with a fabulous teacher and great kids. I loved seeing so many students that enjoy writing, and take an interest in poetry. The good news is, I might be visiting again next week.

Aberdeen Primary School is a place I love to visit. It always feels as if I'm visiting friends. I know a lot of the children, and for a big school, it has a feeling of family. I'm always impressed at their fabulous behaviour. Today is National Poetry Day, so what a perfect day to perform some poems at their assembly. This was made extra special when I performed the poem, 'Mum Can i Have A Pet Monkey,' with my granddaughter. We both enjoyed the experience of working together, she rocks.

You've heard of the Fantastic Mr Fox, well St Michael's at Rotorua, has the fantastic Mrs Brits who organised my visit. From the moment I stepped in the door it felt right to be there. I spent time with the junior school sharing my poems and getting them involved. Then it was the senior school, and what fun we had. It gives me such a buzz to see kids laughing and enjoying words, especially when they're mine! The Driving Lesson has become a favourite to perform, and I get some unsuspecting student up to help me out. My 'victim' proved to be very worthy and quite an entertainer. i loved my time at St Michaels, I can't wait to be asked back.

Agape childhood centre was the next stop. We arrived in the pouring rain, dark skies and freezing cold. But inside it was warm, and like a ray of sunshine with friendliness and smiles. Whaea Trish greeted us with open arms, which, was so appreciated. The children were gathered onto the mat and off we went on a journey of language. Happy faces, sad faces and scary faces. My gt gt nephew goes to Agape, and it was special to share this time with him. I loved the staff and the kids. I even went on a dolly hunt when Barbie went missing.

Top Kids Pukuatua was our next stop. I say, 'Our' as Les came with me as my driver and go to person. What a big centre where I got to work in both the under and over 2's. To share my books, and have children coming up to have a closer look, was full of surprises. I loved seeing them get involved, standing on one leg, jumping, hopping, being sleepy cats and loving rhyme, and learning from it. I also loved seeing my gt gt nephew Nikau and his family.

It was Rotorua,, here I come, and what a fabulous welcome I received at the MindPlus School. Sue their teacher is one of the most inspiring people I've met. I ran creative writing workshops with her students. I listened to their work, read it aloud to them, and gave them some tips and advice. Hearing your work read by a 'professional,' adds a whole new dimension to your words, and I hope instills them with more belief in their writing. I learnt as much from these amazing children as they learnt from me. It was superb.

Yesterday Les and I headed over to Tauranga for the Lions International Young Speechmaker Finals. Students from all over the country, present a prepared speech followed by an impromptu speech. Each speaker is sponsored by a Lions Club. First place wins a sponsored trip to the States/Canada and second place to Australia. Third place winner was Josie pictured with myself, as I've been working with her. It was exciting to see her gain a top 3 placing. Josie now has a place at the International youth camp to be held summer 2016.

Who would've thought, but the next school visited was Leamington....again. The children were so so awesome I was allowed to go back. I had a great time in Miss Meads room, where we talked about sharing and taking turns, and read a poem that took us on a journey where we had to look after one another. After morning tea I got to spend time with a classroom full of 'cool kids'. I read some poems, then they acted out some funny things, that included being popcorn, chickens, and even a lizard. They got to practise teamwork.

Next stop for the day was at the picturesque school at Leamington. The sun was shining on the hills and it was picture perfect. Then I got to meet some of the children, and what a treat that was. Some of the best behaved kids I've ever met, live at Leamington. Miss Faville has been a real supporter of Snail Mail Day, and they've even written to the big boss at NZ Post telling him how much they enjoyed writing letters. I loved my time in each class, even though the last one was rushed. I'm loving your messages Room 6.

Cambridge East Primary was where I headed to this morning.
I went to thank the whole school, yes the WHOLE SCHOOL for writing letters for SNAIL MAIL Day. What a wonderful visit I had, and a huge thank you to the staff, especially Kathy for getting other teachers on board, and all inspiring their students to write. We did the Snail Mail Day rap, then I got to share some poems with the children. It's so nice when you go into a school and you feel at home immediately. Thanks to everyone and I hope to get invited back again soon.

Tokoroa High School was the place to be yesterday if you wanted to hear young speechmakers/orators performing. WOW was the first word to come to mind when it was over, as the standard was so high. I've heard a lot of speeches over the years, and it's rare to judge such a competition without there being a few performers that are still not quite there. But not at Tokoroa High. Thanks for the invite, it was great. Some of these students have the potential to go all the way.

Yesterday,we travelled out to Cambridge, for something entirely different. It was the Lions Young National Speechmaker Of The Year. What a great opportunity this was to hear talented young speakers. I was honoured to be judging this event, along with 2 others, and what a responsibility it was as the national winner receives a trip to America. You have to be between 16 and 21 I believe, but a chance not to be missed. Here are some of the competitors.

Guess what! Because it was so fabulous, I invited myself back to Cambridge Primary School for a short visit. I got to meet the kids in Rooms 1 and 2 and their friendly teachers. I read them 'Granny Does The Boogey' and 'Granny Goes Bungy Jumping.' I loved seeing everyone laughing and enjoying my poems. This is one of the friendliest schools I've ever been to. I even got a hug from the Principal! Lots of children told me how much they'd enjoyed my poems. Thanks for such a fun visit to a school full of stars.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to get to spend a little bit of time at Cambridge Primary School sharing my new books and resources with the teachers. It is so encouraging when staff are positive and enthusiastic about my work. I got to sneak in for a quick visit with the wonderful Erin and her equally wonderful students. It was a sheer delight to see their faces light up when they saw me. I have permission to visit whenever i am in town. Thanks for such a fun experience.

What am I doing to this poor boy at Joseph's Te Kuiti. A visit to Te Kuiti wouldn't be right without visiting this fabulous school. I love the place, but then I have a long history there. I read and shared some poems, then was lucky enough to listen to some of the middle school's writing. I was impressed. Poems and narratives - all from talented young writers. Highlights were performing some poems with my granddaughter, and also the dance version of 'Granny Goes To Hip Hop' by some of the students which gave me a real chuckle. Can't wait to get back.!

2015 visits got off to a flying start yesterday at Cambridge Primary School. Erin's class was the perfect choice. We read, we acted and they wrote. They were the first to see my new book 'Have You Ever Seen A Sheep Dance?" It was great to see them enjoy it, and I loved my time there. A highlight, was the little girl who got very excited as they have my book 'Ready..Set..Jump' at home. She told me it's a family favourite, and was eager for me to read it to the class.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED ME DURING 2014
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED ME DURING 2014

A huge thank you to Margriet Theron for inviting me to this wonderful event, and to Sue their teacher, who is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever met. This is a school (for Gifted Children) who gets no government funding, and has to work and struggle for every sponsorship dollar they get. Sue's passion and energy for what she does was inspirational. Les and I were honoured to be there.

What a great way to end my year! I was invited to the School For Gifted Children in Rotorua. It was their annual prize giving, and the children were to be performing some of my poems. I was a surprise visitor, and it was such a delight as soon as they heard my name, they all spun around to check me out. Hearing children perform my poems was an absolute delight. It was great to meet them all.

Hautupu School you rock. I've had two visits to Hautapu this week. First I helped judge the senior speech finals. A great result for two talented speakers. I love seeing kids gaining confidence in public speaking, then guiding them to be even better. Yesterday I worked with the juniors, reading poems and stories, and had a lot of fun. NEWS FLASH: - I went to the district speech finals and the Hautapu children took out 1st place overall, and the Judges award.

Aberdeen Primary School lunchtime drama group is underway again. Every week is different as to who turns up, which provides some interesting challenges. I love to see the passion of the kids, and their excitement at creating and getting involved. This term I've been reading them my poems which they then act out. They come up with brilliant ideas.

Piopio Primary School rocks. What a school of champions. I didn't want to leave, and was hoping they'd kidnap me and lock me in their classroom so I had to stay. EVERYONE had excellent manners and joined in with respect. I shared my poems, and we laughed and had a great time. The children I worked with are a credit to their parents and teachers, and I can't wait to be invited back again.

Piopio Playcentre was a fun place to spend a morning. Babies, toddlers, big 4 year olds and lovely Mums greeted me with smiles and happiness. I read to them from my book before sharing some new action rhymes. Then it was time to go an imaginary bus trip to the beach, where we played in the sand, climbed over rocks, and explored caves before heading home. I had a wonderful time. Thankyou.

Goodwood School was next on the list of schools to visit. I created a bit of fun and mayhem in 2 junior classes. We did poems from 'Ready..Set..Jump' and the children learnt some new Maori words. I also shared some new poems that haven't been printed yet, 'Who Am I?' and 'Little Mr Kiwi.' Thanks for having me.

Te Miro School was calling me this week, so off I went to have a wonderful morning spent doing my poetry based resources. 'The Driving Lesson' went down well with the seniors, while 'Onions' was a bit of fun with the junior class. I always enjoy my time at this special school. Even got some ideas for more poems.

It's speeches time at the fabulous Hautapu School, and I was lucky enough to be asked to give year 5 - 8 students tips on both writing and presenting their speeches. We had a lot of laughs amidst the learning, and I was delighted when some of the kids told me I inspired them. What rewarding work I get to do.

I was back at Te Totara School as I paid a surprise visit. All of Room 18 had written limericks after my recent visit, and their wonderful teacher videoed them and sent them to me. I loved them so much I asked if I could pop in, and that way I got to read all their limericks myself. A great way to spend time.

Te Totara Primary School, Hamilton. What can I say? Teachers are WOW, but their students are a double WOW WOW! I was lucky to be invited to visit as a part of their book week. I got to work with all nine year 3 and 4 classes. I told them a bit about me, I shared some of my grandchildren's favourite poems (mine of course!) Then they created some still pictures like a slide show. I had a truly wonderful day, and even got to spend time with the wonderful author Dawn McMillan.

The Creative Poetry Writing Workshop was a great success. I had seven amazingly talented young writers. We played some fun word/writing games to break the ice. Then it was into writing. It was surprising how long it took to work on a simple poem, focusing on rhyme and rhythm, very important elements of poetry. The end result was fantastic, with everyone coming up with a great poem to read to the rest of the group. It showed effort and attention to detail pays off.We ended with some fun drama games looking at basic storytelling. Great kids and a great time.
Thursday morning in beautiful sunshine, Les and I drove to Te Miro School, nestled in the hills above Cambridge, where we were greeted by 2 wood pigeons. We were judging the poetry and speeches.
The junior poetry finalists delivered poems with varying degrees of confidence and expression. It was rather special to see one of my poems win. 'The Butt Cheek Boy' continues to make boys smile. The speeches were great. We learnt about Oxford pies, drag racing, animals in danger of extinction, chocolate addiction, fairies, dinosaurs and trees, There are some great orators hiding in the hills above Cambridge. I even got to share a few poems with the audience. Thank you. |
Last week saw me back at David St School in Morrinsville. We had a morning of creative writing mixed with drama games. There were some talented drama kings and queens, and also some extremely talented writers. It was a privilege to be able to read some of their work aloud. I enjoyed the response from their peers.

Aberdeen School drama last week for term 2. Everyone turned up today, including some spectators so we had a very full room. it's been a fun 5 weeks at an affordable price for families. I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these children and watching them develop. I'm looking forward to working with most of them again next term.

It can be confirmed by me, that David Street school in Morrinsville is full of amazing, talented children who enjoy drama and language. I got to share some of my poems. It is such a good feeling when children enjoy my work so much they ask me to read more. I had a blast in every class, reading poems, trying out my teacher resource which involves language and drama activities. The students all got involved, and there were a lot of laughs amidst the learning.

Thanks Mrs R and your super talented class of Year 1, 2 and 3 students at Te Miro School. Those speeches were superb, and they will only get better for the finals. The poems are shaping up well too - keep learning them. I was impressed at how much work they've done. The senior class had also taken on board my suggestions, and it was rewarding hearing some of your work. Well done. More pictures on the photo page.

This week I spent a whole morning at St Columba's School in Frankton. I got to meet the children in six different junior classes. They acted out some of my rhymes, including the sleepy cat Ginger. They enjoyed pulling lots of happy faces, sad faces and some very scary faces. Thank you for having me.

It's not a school visit, but this is me with some wonderful children from Aberdeen school at the Dinsdale library, where they were doing some cards for Snail Mail Day.

There's something about a country school. As I stood outside Te Miro School in the peace and quiet, I could hear the birdsong of tuis which always gives me warm fuzzies. I worked with the whole school as they get ready for their upcoming speeches for the seniors. and poetry for the juniors. There's a real skill in writing and delivering a speech, and a lot of work goes into them. I was honoured to see that 4 of the 8 children had chosen a poem from 'Granny Does The Boogey.'

Vardon School Poetry Café - Thanks for asking me to share some of my poems. What a great turnout, and I was delighted that my poems gave the audience a laugh. Well done Mrs Scott for being such a superb Mother in one of my poems. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the poems the children chose to read, especially when they had written them themselves.

A great day today at Vardon School. Four fabulous teachers, four classrooms of fabulous kids. Vardon School is having their poetry week, and I was asked to talk to the students about writing poems. Remember kids - edit, edit, edit! We did some simple acting games, and had a lot of laughs and fun. I hope I left most of them inspired to write their own poetry. I spent part of lunchtime in Mrs Gunn's room with her creative writing group. Thank you for sharing your work with me.

Today I was at Te Miro school, a country school with fantastic staff in the hills above Cambridge. I worked with the whole school as they start to prepare for their speeches. Today was the hard bit - how to write a good speech. The younger children are doing poems, and guess what, some just might be going to do one of my poems. One boy told me his sister has my book 'Granny Does The Boogey', and his favourite is 'I'm A Butt Cheek Boy.'

On Thursday I braved the elements of the tail of the cyclone, and headed to Cambridge Middle School to work with Lorraine's Year 8 class. With Anzac approaching, we used "Lest We Forget.' The kids hooked into it really well, Lorraine said, 'they had a ball." Rhyme/poetry and drama are such amazing tools in helping improve or stimulate a child's creativity. It was such awful weather the camera was left in the car.

I had a bit of a spontaneous visit with some truly wonderful children at Marian School, in Hamilton East. I happened to be there meeting their fantastic librarians Mrs Brown and Rose, when a senior class came into the library. I was asked if I had some time, and never wanting to miss an opportunity of sharing poetry with kids, I spent time reading to them from 'Granny Does The Boogey.' I also read a bit of Samantha's book, that she has done herself, and was very impressed. Thanks for having me, and I'd love to return.

How much fun does this look like? I am running a Drama Club at Aberdeen school every Tuesday and loving it. Each week more kids turn up to join in and have fun. It's all girls! It's affordable at $5.00 a week. I'm meeting so many wonderful children, and the neat thing about getting together every week is getting to know each other. They're a fabulous bunch and I look forward to working with them again in Term 2.

Here is a photo of Rooey who came with me to meet the children.
After an enjoyable morning in Matamata reading to visually impaired people. I raced back to Pukete School as it was their book day. I've never seen so many fairies, princesses, spidermen and pirates in one place at the same time. I worked with 7? different classes over the hour. I read from my books, and the wonderfully behaved children did the actions. We read 'Up Up And Away', a poem about Annabella Marie floating off over the zoo. Each class took a turn at showing us an animal of their choice. Some lions sure were scary, but I think my favourites were the crocodiles, meerkat and the cheetah. Thanks for having me Pukete School junior department.

Working on creating a scene based on my Anzac poem.
I had a bit of a fleeting visit to work with two Year 5/6 classes. Thanks to the teachers Cathy and Judith for letting me visit, disrupt everything and take over for a while.
You may have seen I'm starting to write resources for teachers, so I need to trial them. Thanks Cambridge East for taking the Anzac poem on board and letting me see how it worked. The students were a credit to you, and showed me the resource works pretty well. Just need to put the book together now!

Bluestone School year 3 and 4 pupils have dome some wonderful art work and their wonderful librarian Mrs Ross was kind enough to send me some photos. They even sent me a photo of their class, Well done Mr Rawson and Room 10

Bluestone School in TImaru - No I didn't visit, but they bought my books and sent me a wonderful email this morning which I have permission to share.
Just thought you might like to know how well the poems are being received here so far. I have been reading a selection to our younger students during class visits and last Thursday I challenged a class of 6 year olds to draw their own rainbow rabbit over the weekend. Four of them remembered and I have setup a display with their efforts and some poetry books along with your competition flier. I'm sure you will agree that Matilda's rainbow rabbit is outstanding. She made it separately and pasted it on to the paper she has decorated. We gave her a book prize for her wonderful effort.

This was Matilda's rabbit. Isn't she clever. I was very impressed with her wonderful art work. I loved how the rabbit looks to be jumping and playing in the grass.
Then I got another email which said -
And it gets even better. Now the Year 2 class is creating rainbow rabbits using iPad apps. They are gorgeous and have spent their Discovery time today doing this. You are welcome to use my feedback on your website. The teacher commented she would love you to visit us. We look forward to your next book.

WOW is all I can say about Karapiro School. I had thee most magical day with amazing teachers and equally amazing students. I shared my poems and rhymes. I love to get the kids involved, and it was so rewarding seeing all 22 in one group laughing as we read each poem. The Driving Lesson was a firm favourite, with some of the children almost begging me to read it again. I had a blast and hope I get asked back again. Thanks kids for joining in and letting me see how much you enjoy my work. I even had a lovely email last night from one student thanking me and telling me she'd enjoyed my visit. Too many great kids to name, but Jerome, I can still hear your giggle!
